All electrical work has to be completed, under H&S law, by a "competent person" who is "someone who has the suitable training, skill and knowledge for the task to be undertaken to prevent injury to themselves and others". The HSE site expands on this to say "A successfully completed electrical apprenticeship, with some post-apprenticeship experience, is one way of demonstrating technical competence for general electrical work."

My Dad's school took this to mean "no wiring plugs without a qualification".

Exactly though I wouldn't expect that kind of training to be required for someone replacing a plug but for installing a new electrical circuit yes.

I'd take it to mean wiring a plug for your own domestic use is fine, but not as part of your job. Saying that, all new appliances not only have to come with a plug, they have to come with a moulded plug. Still a useful skill to pass on, though. Imagine a kid turning up for his/her first day as an apprentice sparky and they didn't even know how to wire a plug! Edited by StevieM

See my second post on it...

It's not doing electrical work though if you are demonstrating and allowing them to practice how to attach a plug, which are the correct colours and to make sure the terminals are sufficiently done up though so your second post has nothing to do with it.

As I said, that was the explanation given in my Dad's school - the electronics dept was banned from teaching it by the senior management due to the stuff the HSE have as their advice.

They should now pay only by cheque. To discourage collecting British Rails cables and weighing them in for cash.

You are quite right, they should... However.
