Looking at a new digital signage system

We currently have onelan at the school but are looking at some alternatives at the moment. Our system at the moment is all the tv feeds come into our office and we run a digital splitter into the onelan box. I have been looking a xibo as a lot of people on here have recommended it. I was thinking about using one of our old pcs and installing xibo onto it and plugging it into the splitter for the tvs. Will this work or is there any better alternatives that i do not know about.

That should work, so long as all of the TVs run at the same resolution if outputting via VGA/HDMI (won't matter if they're on an SD format like composite but it'll look poor). Otherwise, your system will work fine and should be easy to manage. Try to make sure the PC you use has half decent graphics oomph (even old Intel X4500 stuff can handle it fine) otherwise it may be choppy depending on content.

Struggling with the installation of the xibo. I am using a windows 7 machine but cannot get anything to load. Does anyone have a good installation guide on how to do it?

I have used Anders and Kern PADS system. Very expensive but very good. Nearly got Planet eStream last year but didn't, that would have done everything. I am using Clickview for our outside screen and is running a Chromecast. For our reception screen I settled on getting rid of the A&K system as the computer was getting sluggish and started to use PowerPoint. I found a nice little free piece of software called PresentationPoint which looks for changes to a PowerPoint file on a network share. You can do anything PowerPoint can and still have notices displaying. The office just edit the PowerPoint file and save it and the updates appear a few seconds later.

 

Never have time to get Xibo up and running and no one here seems to want anything extra on digital signage anyway.

I'm in the market for a *cheap* solution as well. Currently we have an internal web page that sits in our CMS and rolls notices round on one half and has a bit of javascript on the other half which picks up a multicast TV stream using the VLC plugin for Firefox and runs BBC news. For display we have a PC that, on boot, launches Firefox in kiosk mode and has this page as a home page, sending it's output to a VGA into 8-way cat5 splitter with small cat5 to vga receivers behind each TV. I know it sounds a bit heath robinson, but it largely works, apart from the VLC plugin seeming to crash overnight on an alarmingly frequent basis. Was thinking of looking at Xibo as a replacement but wondered what others views of it were ?

 

Big question I guess is can Xibo handle streaming a TV channel alongside DS content ?
