Unblock Apple App Store on Lightspeed

Recommended Posts

I've come back to find I can't access the App Store in any of my schools so I'm putting this down to some global lightspeed issue.

What URLs do I need to unblock?

Interesting

Just checking before I call - your using Lancs OneConnect as ISP with Lightspeed and not had to do anything to get App Store access?

Afternoon, one of my schools that still remains on the lovely Bt Lancashire system through LightSpeed has just got a couple of iPads themselves and I'm having the lovely "cannot access" messages when I try to connect to the App Store, so I just thought I'd ask what settings you're using to connect with so I can make sure that it's nothing to do with the iPad setup before I go diving further.

Thanks

Andy

Its stable on the Admin range, not on Curric. But I take your point, it was working before the summer break. I suspect that BTLS are tinkering with the settings but not bothering to let anyone know. I use Apple Configurator to deploy to the IPads so I connected the IMac to Admin and everything worked wonderfully. IOS 8 is due out tomorrow, now how are you supposed to cope with intermittent access for a full upgrade! Edited by sdj

I think they are fiddling with it, because the internet here is super duper slow and I can no longer override things. Rather frustrating wot wot!

I've been doing some work at a primary school and they had this issue. After some digging I discovered that the 'shopping' category is blocked by default in LightSpeed. itunes.apple.com falls into that category so gets blocked. Rather than allowing the category I put this URLs into the student allowed url patterns and this got them going. I also put a few others in for good measure to make sure app updates etc worked:

phobos.apple.com

itunes.apple.com

ax.itunes.apple.com

albert.apple.com

gs.apple.com

No proxy settings or anything at all here for the ipads to connect.

Just heard back from BT Lancs myself and they said they'd added an iTunes URL Pattern Group with the following:

apple.com, itunes.com, itunes.apple.com

That seems to have done the job for this school as the iPads are now synced and happy.

I'm having problems with this at 2 Lancashire sites. I have logged the call with BTLS, but you guys might know the answer right away! I've unblocked all the above urls... iOS 7 and 8.

scratch that... it's going through now!!! Must have needed a moment to sync up.

Hi Joanne...is it still working?

Using iOS 8.1, I'm also having intermittent app installations via a BT Lancashire internet connection. Logged and chased a call twice now, hoping they will respond to me sometime this year!!

Whitelisted all of this in a URL Pattern, still no joy:

gateway.sandbox.push.apple.com

deimos3.apple.com

phobos.apple.com

itunes.apple.com

ax.itunes.apple.com

albert.apple.com

gs.apple.com

Update: After chasing the issue again, BT Lancashire have changed the schools public IP address and apps have installed straight away. They say this is an iOS 8 issue, im not sure, but im happy its working now.

(8.1) I can browse the app store but downloading apps doesn't work.

A way to find out what's being blocked would be to connect an ios device to a wifi ap to a hub (pre-switch) and then monitor the traffic with a laptop connected to the hub. Unlike switches, hubs copy the traffic to all ports. I have a 8 port hub..not sure where the wifi ap went.

I've unblocked:

phobos.apple.com

itunes.apple.com

ax.itunes.apple.com

albert.apple.com

gs.apple.com

apple.com

itunes.com

I also called BTLS and they said they had a call open with apple. He said he had put a workaround on my filtering (not sure now accurate that is!!) but I have it working on iOS 8.1.

seems the problem is appstore is trying to download apps from other devices not appleHQ. That's why unblocking urls makes no difference.

Apple tells your device who to talk to, to retrieve an app.

the problem we have is that apple is making assumptions that our ip ranges are visible to each other when they're not. My device on 10.77.x.x is trying to talk to 10.74.x.x
