Hi. I have recently setup a office 365 domain and now want to start adding users. I thought I would use dirsync for all our curriculum users but when I run it the software created users with email addresses @onmicrosoft.com I have checked and my default domain is set to the sch.uk one. Any ideas how I fix this ?

Thanks

I have added the school domain to the o365 tenant and created manual accounts. Our school server domain name is a fake eg domain.school. Does this mean i need to add additional UPNs ?

Yes, you need to add the UPN for the actual school domain and then assign this UPN to all the o365 user accounts. Luckily you can do this as a batch operation in ADUC by selecting multiple users and going to properties then changing the UPN once for all the selected users.

Just checking; your .local domain is externally routable/ you have no trusts with any other forests and you have less than 50,000 items to sync or 300,000 items with a vanity domain? I can spare you 30mins for a chat if you need some guidance.

Cheers,

I bet it's down to the proxyAddresses in AD.

Open the user account in Active Directory, click on Attribute Editor, scroll down to proxy addresses, make sure the primary address is set to SMTP: (USER EMAIL ADDRESS) *don't put a space after the colon.

You might need to reassign the licenses to the user.

Hmm I have altered it and forced a sync and the first user i tested still has the wrong email address.

Which it, it should just be the UPN, which of the above have you tried?

Do yourself a big favour...

Whatever you do don't enable Hybrid Mode when you sync.

It wrecked all 3 of my domain controllers at once and had to rebuild from scratch... and it lunched my Exchange server.

Interesting few days that !

Bang on. That's probably it.

The 'email address' field in the AD object properties is the sync'd users Primary email address and domain.

If you are using two or more domain names you need to add all email addresses and aliases in the attribute editor for O365 to sync properly and assign the correct domain after the @.

Primary email address begins with 'SMTP' prefix, any other addresses/aliases prefix with 'smtp' - (check on 'net if I've got that the right way round).

proxy addresses is currently (not set) so ill give that a try. Do i have to do that for 90 users tho ?

Yep its a pain. Make sure you do this for any new users in the future too.

I've got one email account where I misspelled the proxy address, it didn't sync both addresses so I had to manually add it in O365... every time I sync now I have to disable the AD account for that user or it overwrites the account with one of the same name.

I'd do a few syncs with a test DC first to make sure it does what you want it to do.

Thanks everyone for the excellent help over the weekend & last week. Im pretty much sorted now and well on the way to getting the new email system up and running. One other strange thing I have noticed is that although everyone has the correct email addresses now in the top right by their name it says the wrong email addresses. Im thinking of deactivating ad sync and clearing up the accounts what were created and then re-syncing. Is this a good idea ?

Yeh dns is all sorted. I think its because I ran dirsync before setting the correct upn :S. Yes if i click on them they have the correct domain but they have an additional email alias for the onmicrosoft account.

Has anyone had any issues with new email accounts being stuck in the creation stage for a long time ? The first few I assigned licenses to are saying:

Manage email addresses -

We are preparing a mailbox for this user.

also the admin interface is slow as anything to update and load

It does do that. It's Microsoft after all. Performance varies to say the least. Read the blurb and it say can take 24hrs for configs to apply Edited by mikkydoos

Change the user mailbox to Cloud based in ADMIN.

Delete it, delete from R'bin and re-sync. It did that with me on a few.

Support with take ages... and you'll get bombarded with calls from different reps chasing up different stages of the call. Then you'll get the customer satisfaction team bombarding you after that to see if you were happy.

Quite laughable. Still, better than dealing with our LA ; )
