Xbox Two, Ps5?

This topic went from, Xbox one / Ps4, to 'oooo buuurrnnn', to - how to distract a guy from playing game (which is sin!).

 

Is it just me, or is this RAPIDLY heading down the wrong water pipe?

 

What about the Xbox Three ..... 60 ??

5 years maybe. Maybe longer maybe shorter. You would have thought they would want to release them quicker to force you to upgrade more often.

 

I'm still on PS3 because a) only play FIFA when mates round and b) only use it for netflix

Men are easy to buy presents for. Just get yourself some skimpy lingerie and say it's for 'his benefit'. You get to buy yourself things, and he gets his rocks off.

Casual sexism all around! (Hope I'm not actually offending anybody. This is, of course, all meant in jest and I make no assumption on anybodies relationships, nor their often-stereotyped gender attributes)

 

But back on topic, @visioN, I would think they'd be absolutely nuts to make it too soon, given the hefty price tag on these machines now. I think anything below 4 years will be ridiculous. I think 2 years on they'll start mentioning things they want to do with the next console, aim to have it out at the end of Year 3, but have to push it back and release it 6-8 months later (maybe even delayed until near Christmas)

I said 5 years which I think is a good investment really for that period.

But at the end of the day these companies just want to make as much money out of the consumer as possible, the faster they bring out a new console, the faster they can sell us the next one!

But you're right, people simply won't upgrade too quickly - plus the games need to catch up!

I'd say around 5 years life span. They haven't been out a year yet so I think you'll get your money's worth from either console to be honest. If you're holding off buying to wait for the next gen you'll be waiting a while!

 

Having said that I'm quite disappointed by the latest gen consoles in terms of their hardware specs. I recall when the Xbox360/PS3 came out they were pretty much on a par with a top of the range PCs at the time. The PS4/XB1 are only really comparable to a mid range one now. If you've bought a PC in the last 3 years I reckon you could fit a £150-200 video card to it and it would offer better visuals than either console. Sony/MS have obviously decided this time round they're not prepared to lose money selling the consoles (with the intention of making it back on the games) like they did with the last gen.

To be fair, a lot of people just bought a PS3 for a cheap* blu-ray player, the gaming was just a bonus.

WOT!?!?! Omg... I got a PS4 during the holidays and I LOVE it. I got PSN subscription and you get 3 games a month too... which is cool. Also got The Last of Us which is a scary zombie thing. Love it.... <3 <3 <3

 

I have one on order ironically, expecting it today or tomorrow!

I got a PS4 just the other week. I decided to change to that from an xbox360 because I really wanted to play The Last Of Us and because I played with an xbox one in a shop and thought it was good but there were no "I _must_ play this game" titles (at least to my tastes) on it.

 

I have to say I'm really impressed with the PS4. I don't have many games but I am impressed with all the ones I do have. It has replaced my bluray player as well as my xbox, and it also can play movies from plex via the web browser, so it might well end up with me moving my mac mini that runs both my 'main' plex client and the plex server into my 'server cupboard' and having a much tidier tv cabinet.

I wouldn't expect another generation of console. Consoles are being phased out like discs I think. Hopefully they will be gone and PC's will be the primary gaming platform.

Me thinks you don't understand the console market - it's a tad bit bigger than you think if you think it can be phased out in a generation. Something like the Steam Console would have to be pretty disruptive to achieve that. Smartphones have been the most likely contender, they seem to have got Japan but the rest of the world as yet to follow. Personally I'd say PC's are more likely to die out in favour of consoles/smartphones/tablets/laptops/set-top boxes. Convergence is a pipe-dream.

I'd say a console could become the "multi-media hub" of the house hold.

 

Xbox one you can get Skygo app, netflix, access your NAS for music, pics, movies etc. I really don't think they are slowly dying out, at all.

All of which is possible from a PC. What the PCGamingMasterRace don't seem to take account of is to set that up on a machine is - for the average user - rather difficult.

Consoles are basically pre-configured media centres now and it's easy to understand why. Gap in the market and all. I say fair play to them (but I'm still sticking with my PC)

Very true but like you say they are per-configured for the average user so is much more slick!

I do like consoles for games like FIFA, 4 of us playing 2v2 (only have 4 controls for my PS3) which is cool!

I'm a big console fan but I do think they will start to die out over the next decade or so (in their current form at least).

 

I reckon they will go the way of movies and you will pay for a service rather than a console. With the constant stream of increased broadband speeds/reliability and the likes of Playstation Now and EA Access leading the way (and showing it can be done), I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we go down the Subscription/On Demand route.

 

Also with Destiny being always online and still selling a stupid amount within it's first day, it just shows that people are quite happy with games requiring a constant interweb connection to play (ignoring the uproar MS faced with their original XBone plans). On Demand just seems like the logical progression.

OK I was considering this the other day XB1 or PS5? So I went for a complete curve ball and bought a WiiU off eBay - my first home console since the SNES. My reasoning is that I wanted something I could play with friends when they came over, if I wanna play me only/online games then I've still got my PeeCee.

Easy to setup and with great graphics etc etc. Yes a cracking PC will knock spots off a console but just how many people are willing to pay the thick end of a grand? ~£300 - £400 is much more manageable plus there's the guarantee the games will work without having to fork out for a bigger and better graphics card!

I usually budget £600 for a PC but you're still right. A lot of people complain about the price tags (and closer to the start of the console era, maybe they were right) but now they're much more than that. Just like a PC isn't a glorified typewriter, nor are games consoles just for video games anymore.

 

You're getting a promise of compatibility (or as good as - there have been some issues) which is always good, too. So even though they're 'basically pre-configured PC's' they're still great for the casual user because they work and they won't need tinkering with.

PS4 is a fantastic console and a bargain for the £350 Sony are asking for it. Even more so now it comes with Destiny bundled for the same price. Granted if you spent a couple of hundred more you could probably build a better PC and get the games off steam cheaper but if you don't want a desktop PC and still want to play the latest games the PS4 is the way to go IMO.

 

I say that as someone who also owns an Xbox One before any fan boys chirp in! Admittedly MS's online service is vastly superior to Sony's PSN offering which seems to be down every other week due to DDOS attacks or other technical issues!
