Was just wondering what the best and cheapest network testers you can get you hands on to measure length of cable and to tone and probe for cable diagnostics. We always us the cable coninuity tester but want something bit more fancy and make my job easier.

What is your budget?

I bought one from Maplin for £20, it works for what I want it to do.

If you're installing your own cable but don't care about it being certified to any relevant standard than the cheaper fluke tools or test-um such as nt-700 if you can find one will do the job.

Another option would be to rent a tester if you don't do much cabling , we get one for the last week of summer after all the cables have been run from local company for £50 for week

A useful tester we've found is made by Paladin Tools - we got ours from CPC

1573 - PALADIN TOOLS - TONE AND PROBE KIT | CPC

It combines a standard simple LAN cable tester with a tone generator/probe - brilliant for cable tracing, even down to individual wires within a bundle.

The only annoying feature is the on/off switch on the side which gets knocked on and runs the battery down (duh).

All the LAN certification tools cost way more than we can afford, but as above, hiring is probably worth investigating.

We've got a LinkRunner Pro which is a wonderful bit of kit, will tell you cable lengths, wiremaps, and loads of useful info when plugged into a switch (port, vlans, POE info) i've just had a look, and it's been discontinued, but there is a new model the Linkrunner AT, these are available in the reigon of £1000, which i know seems like a lot, but for a tester it really isn't and the info you get can be invaluable.

We bought a "Fluke Networks LinkRunner AT 2000 fiber" in March at a cost of £1191 ex VAT, very expensive for us at the time.

 

However a superb piece of kit and I consider it has paid for itself already in troubleshooting network issues.

Note ours only does up to 1 gig fibre, there may be a model that does 10 gig

Yes, it's the AT, but not the fibre one.
