Gardinho Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 I drove down the road this morning and noticed a massive motorised wheel pulling what looked to be black fibre cable into the duct beside our telephone cab. There is a BT van every few hundred yards going back down toward the exchange, and several BT engineers at intervals in between. Dare I get excited? I have been on 5mb ADSL for way too long!

I've been waiting, regularly checking the superfastcornwall.org site to see when I can get upgraded. It tells me today that I can get FTTP, but go through BT's retails site and it initially says I can get FTTC too, but when I go through the order process, it estimates I can get 1.5Mb/s and I can't get FTTP. I'm assuming this is the usual BT disorganisation... I guess I need to wait longer for them to sort themselves out. meldrew
madurham Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Sounds like it. When my area was done new cabs sprang up all across the village and a month or two later fibre was available. Just check Where and when - Superfast Fibre Broadband everyday. (It's way more informative now) 2

It will be they were doing it in my small town the other month and I just had my connection upgraded today. 1

plexer Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Check out Welcome - Superfast Fibre Broadband whack your postcode in and it will tell you what's happening. They normally pull in the fibre guide and blow the fibre in. Ben 2

A neighbour of mine was up there earlier and the BT engineer confirmed that they were laying the fibre guide. I'll be on the BT website twice a day until it goes live!

rich_tech Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 (edited) my parents can finally get fibre here and are having it installed on the 26th, they have 1.5 mbps atm down and 0.30 up, BT have done some genuinely stupid wiring to their house, theres an exchange much nearer (within 2 miles) that has a pole running within 400 yards of my parents house on the common land to a different part of where they live, but for some strange reason they have been wired on the telephone to an exchange at the max distance limit of ADSL and piggy backed off the local commercial estate half a mile from their house. Worse still is that BT have stuck a DP on their street here under a manhole cover on the common land, which regularly floods at winter for them, leaving them without broadband, which BT have done absolutely nothing about despite every engineer citing it as being something that needs to change. You wonder who makes these decisions at times with them regarding the planning and routing of the cabling, my only hope is that the fibre delivers anything over 5mb for them, as even youtube is a struggle for them here at the moment. When I actually had infinity installed (for 3 whole weeks), I managed 5Mb, I get 4Mb out of ADSL! Woe is me, for my FTTC cab is still a mile down the road :|

I am surprised that "monopolistic setup" still exists for Hull(I know they offer some form of LLU now), friend of mine was stuck with them as an ISP years back and was tortured by them as his connection was terrible.

ONly got monopoly in tmers of residential... but as residential customers they are all we can have unless you go for a WISP... which are as equally terrible.

Being able to use 3rd party off site backup solutions and not taking several months to complete one backup of 500gb of data, all well and good saying use an external hard drive or something else on site but in the rare instance there is a fire or flood / some other natural disaster then going to be difficult to recover data etc Im talking more from a home user perspective than a company as I would like to use a backup solution that is off site ie google back blaze or similar but with having ADSL2+ I only get 1mbps upload which even with 250 gb of data said it would take 7 months to make a backup ( that is uploading all day / all night etc ) which is just silly

And in short as im on my phone... game servers (25 man) for specific games. Id need about 40mb upload for about 3 servers... or 4... I dunno. The dl is for... movi.... vid.... streaming. Lol

Or have two drives - each time you visit replace it with the new backup...sounds so silly but it'd be effective And surely if you're serious about hosting you'd just rent some servers? I dunno.
