Windows 8.1 file copying awful - What do you use?

It's a bit of an 'Elephant in the room' situatuion this. For qauite a while now My office PC runnign 8/1 has big issues copying large files in Windows. This is both over the network to iSCSI and to USB. It will copy fine for about a minuite then the copy speed drops off to zero as Windows has 'a senior moment' and tries to remember just what exactly it was doing for a while before getting back to copying again. Then repeating the process a bit further on.

I know this is widely reported and as I have a new server in the office I'm busy transferring 1.5TB of clutter from the old one to the new. At the moment I'm using TeraCopy, but am wondering if any of you are using something with a few more feature (or indeed better looking!) to ease the pain?

TBH, it's always one thing I've admired Macs for, the speed at which you can get files on\off a usb drive.

I mostly just robocopy everything to be honest

Disable any on-access AV scanner such as Windows Defender when doing large batches.

I've not had any problems with copying files in Windows 8.1, although for multi-terabyte file transfers I tend to use RoboCopy like @Stuart_C (or FastCopy).

 

Which anti-virus software do you use?

How much RAM do you have, Windows seems to chuck the whole lot in RAM then spool it out from there, had weird issues with it in Server 2008 R2. As above Robocopy works fine, I would also look at a packet capture from wireshark as it could be some network hardware not coping with the TCP windows or falling back too quickly.

 

 

It could be a bad MTU or a device that does not have jumbo frames enabled or something.

RAM's not a problem, although given its identical issues with copying to USB I don't think it's our switch (a GB D-Link DGS-1216T) which has performed fine in the past.

As for RAM I've got 16GB to play with and it's not really hitting that.

Sorry, that's just an autonomic response from dealing with the 1248T series till they drove me nuts. It does not have to be the switch, but I'd check jumbo packets and give it a powercycle, also check the drivers on both ends for jumbo packets and try it without TCP offload, bad Intel drivers have caused me no end of grief on this. Did eventually get some that worked with hyper-V and coped with high packet throughput. TCP window scaling could also cause issues Receive Window Auto-Tuning on Vista. - Windows Core Networking - Site Home - MSDN Blogs this tech is still about and can still trip older routers and firmware to cause issues, I lost count of the numbers of WAPs running slightly outdated network stacks that shot themselves thanks to this one.

I know when I was in my last job using Windows 7 we had to turn off a feature called remote differential comparison, in add/remove features, that seemed to solve the speed issues we used to have, not sure if it is in 8 as I'm not using it but thought it was work a mention.
