Cisco or HP

Looking to change a lot of switches next year and have a 100% HP environment at the moment however in the last 3 years I have had to contact HP support about 4 times for relatively minor things like the odd power supply on a PoE switch or a HHD failing in my SAN and each and every time I loose count of the hoops I have to jump through.

Is Cisco any better? Opinions please? (PS... no Im not installing netgear)

We have a fair mix between Procurve / HP Networking V19** and Cisco SG300 models. I like them both very much - great value, easy to set up. All have been solid, the Ciscos are less fussy on GBICs used but cost a good chunk more. Both choices have lifetime warraties - so there is a definite contest!

You can only talk to Cisco with a support contract, or get software updates with a support contract. I like the hardware fine, but find them terrible value over the longer terms schools tend to keep switches.

 

I didn't like the HP server support very much, but never had any issue with the Procurve side.

 

On a procurve note, I'd still personally only get the Provision switches and not the 3coms, although that is just my preference.

I have found Cisco switches to be very reliable. Also there is loads of help resources on the internet for Cisco devices.

call me an evil heathen if you want but just noticed Dell switches seems to have a limited, parts only lifetime warranty on their 3000 series.

 

Basically there is no real trauma but after a few years of dealing with HP's call centre, I am ready to shop around a little.

If you look at dell do not go for the Power Connect series. Go for the Force 10 range. Much better!

I would look at Juniper, HP and Cisco.

Basically, you'll get 3x more switching for you're money by hoing HP over Cisco. So the question is - how big is your budget?

 

If my budget was 3x bigger I probably would have gone cisco - but in terms of value for money you can't beat HP.
