DNS suffix on multiple DNS- I need a comparison!

Hi,

 

I'm having some odd DNS issues I'm struggling to get to the bottom of, which I started investigating months ago. I'm looking at the DNS suffixes on the DNS server when you view the network adaptor properties, click on the advanced button in the IPV4 properties, then click the DNS tab.

 

Could someone with at least 2 DNS servers on their network please look at the attached screenshot and tell me if the settings match their network or not? Also, I need to know if you use .local in your domain name or not (e.g: schoolname.net, schoolname.org, schoolname.local etc.) as we don't, and I'm wondering if this has an impact on this setting or not.

 

We're also an RM CC4 school, so would be interesting to see the same info from another 2 or more DNS server RM School.

We have 5 different suffixes in that list. We don't use .local

 

Our suffixes relate to out Domain names. If you have DNS zones setup for those domains, this should then try appending each suffix in turn when pinging the device short name.

 

So as an example it could list domains

 

Red.com

Yellow.Red.com

Blue.Red.com

 

You have DNS zones for each of these.....you ping device "My-PC" and it will try My-PC.red.com first then work it's way down the list until it finds a response.

 

Out of interest, what exactly is the problem you're having?

So are you saying that I should add my domain name to this list, or it will query the domain automatically as a domain member?

Not sure this would definitively rule anything out for you. You could still have a local host file or another issue with a path not hard set here in DNS appending. I would go to the lower level of simply doing tracerts for the domains you are having issues with and checking those results against this screenshot as to what should be resolving. That would give a better idea of where to look for the issue as opposed to crossing problems off the list.
