we have been using these 'cameras' on a loan basis this week, all went well until we tried to export an avi file created by the camera and play it in mdeia player on a laptop to show in assembly. the avi file showed the visulisations and sound only, other avi files work perfectly well. tried another xp workstation, exactly the same, finally got it to work on a third laptop. any ideas is it a codec problem?

ps whilst wrestling with this network went down, several circuits later of the school revealed network cable plugged into two sockets! never a dull moment

Al the codecs installed on all the machines? can't be the cameras if it plays on one after all!

 

There's a whole thread on looping 2 sockets together somewhere. Enable spanning tree protocol stops it if you have managed switches - otherwise don't cable up the unused ports - was the best advice I seem to recall.

the laptop that the file plays on has wmp 8 the others have 10, I'll compare the codecs on Mon, I'd already read the thread about the network cables thankfully, gave me an idea what i might be looking for.

Bit bodgy but try just installing the DB software on the laptops and that should install the codecs.

 

Also try playing back the files using mplayer2.exe (this is the old MS playback software but is still installed on all MS machines)

 

Its a lot simpler and usually works.

Or better still, try using Media Player Classic to play the file:

Single exe - doesnt need installation - i've got it for a teacher to play DVDs on - and I've heard nothing bad back yet

 

It should play it - you could stick it on a mapped share and make a icon for it, thats what I've done - tho only for the staff - as all the pupils will start downloading stuff to playback using it hehe
