It'll never take off for many reasons, one of the principle reasons being cost. RFID installations are notoriously expensive, so the cost of RFID readers, suitably powerful antennas, tracking and integration software, even down to the tags themselves will most likely be prohibitively expensive for most schools.

 

And they can't justify the cost when it's so easy to jerk around with the system. Swapping uniforms, jammers etc. they should just insert a chip under the skin and be done with it if they're that interested in tracking the herd

My own plan was simply to arm all techs with army surplus Lee-Enfield .303s...

I think it's the political cost would be too great rather than the financial cost. I don't think parents would accept it. for an RFID registration scheme to be successful every student would need to be tagged. I wouldn't allow a child of mine to be tagged. Tagging is for criminals. I wonder, was this school a SERCO/CMIS school ? SERCO already have a number of prison service contracts

That's not a new problem though - schools which use swipe-card registration on the doors must also find that. I wonder if they ever found a decent solution?

 

It is an interesting idea, but it's not without its complications, and I don't just mean technological ones. I can see the benefits, but I'm not sure how I'd actually feel if it was my kid who was being tagged and tracked. The cost must be huge as well - surely schools could find better things to do with that sort of money?

 

Perhaps we could tag the staff too, and have a computer screen outside the staff room saying who is in there, so the kids don't have to keep disturbing people by knocking on the door every 5 seconds. :-)

I wouldn't accept it either - let alone the parents. It is yet another step in the wrong direction.

Hi All

We are just about to begin using a biometric system for school dinners which will allow us to have a cashless system.

 

Having looked at the system in action there seems to be no reason at all why the whole school could not go down this route for registration as it takes data from the existing Sims SQL database and uses it to link certain parts of the pupils fingerprint called points which cannot be constructed to reveal a full finger print (fulfills data protection and customer confidentiality) and this could be used via readers on all teachers computers to take the register.

 

It could also be used to allow staff access to rooms and corridors plus the school entrance.

 

The cost would be quite minimal as well.

I suggested this to our Deputy Head responsible for attendance years ago and the concept was acceptable. It'll never happen here though!
