TomStanley Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Hi guys, We are running a 'gaming club' at lunchtime whereby the users can play online games etc. Minecraft is also something that they are wanting but we are having issues through the proxy downloading the 'source files' As a complete newbie to Minecraft, is there any way of downloading an offline installer of Minecraft? Thanks, Tom.
matt40k Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I know a few schools in Suffolk have had the ports opened up for certain games, just a thought if your doing it legit (ie your not a student)
TomStanley Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Thanks for that, we use YHGFL, do you happen to know which ports need to be open?
dannyjay Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Minecraft Education Edition You can bypass the internet version and host your own maps, saving Student/Staff progress after each session. We run this in two Academies for enrichment successfully. It costs about £300+ but enables a 'Teacher' player so you can moderate the game/chat etc.

X-13 Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 It was featured on the BBC this morning BBC News - Should teachers use Minecraft in our classrooms? "This is an additive game. You're encouraging that addiction." "You're seriously saying it doesn't matter if a child can write with a pen?!" [it doesn't, BTW.] GG, BBC. Way to stay impartial.
JRowley Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 If you download the Minecraft client and install it on your computer (at home if not possible in house), you can then copy your install to wherever you like. The only real issue you will have is where Minecraft installs itself by default. You can find it at: C:\Users\jrowley\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft Now it can get irritating here, whenever you run the Minecraft.exe it will always look for the install in AppData. So you have to copy it to the user's AppData folder if you want them to use it. This is likely all different for the Education version if you wish to spend the money on that, modded versions such as that one can typically be run from anywhere you like as they use customised launchers.
timbo343 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Oh great! so the schools that don't use roaming or mandatory profiles are going to have to allow it. Looks like if this goes ahead at our place, i really hope it doesn't, i will have to create a special minecraft account on our network.

That's how we did it, it's not that bad as you can then control who has access to it and restrict when and where it can be logged in.
