School Radio Station

We have a school radio station here which for the past 9 years has been broadcasting on online using a mix of windows encoder and windows media services with an embedded media player plugin on the website. Over the last year we have had reports of this being unreliable to listeners outside the school and doesn't work on mobile devices / macs etc. I want to update this setup with updated encoder software and streaming software that can stream to a better plugin maybe flash / html5 orientated?

 

Do any of you run a radio station if so what is your setup to stream to the internet?

I help setup an internet station for a friend a while back and did everything using shoutcast. Pretty straight forward to setup and plenty of guides out there to help. It's very reliable and easy to use.

 

It streams from the studio to a online service called mixstream as the studio has limited bandwidth. This lets them have lots of listeners but there is a cost involved with this part.

We've not had much luck using the likes of Shoutcast so we would much rather be able to stream it directly off our site.

Shoutcast would still be the best , what issues are you having with it?

Just unreliable service they wouldn't always connect up we have the ability and capacity to stream it out of our site. and would much prefer to do it in house

The Shoutcast Server is free and open source - Download a copy of Shoutcast DNAS - you can then set your own bitrate etc.

 

(You will most likely need an outbound IP or if behind LEA Firewall, the port you pick needs to be unblocked so traffic can pass through)
