Am I imagining things or did I see a link in a thread to apple where you could get the above programs for free if you purchased your ipads after a certain date?

Had a search and nothing came up

I believe it was October 2013 when Apple announced this. With every purchase of a new iPad after this date you were entitled to Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Iphoto and iMovie.

You are planning for students to set up their own Apple ID's on the iPads and are not bothered about giving these apps away to them and not retaining ownership of the content!

 

otherwise....

 

You need send Apple an email to the address below with the serial numbers attached of the iPads you have purchased, Apple will then create spreadsheets with redeem codes which you can use with Apple Configurator

Convert those redeem codes into VPP licences for managed distribution with your MDM solution.
