I need to send off one of our UPS units back to the manufacturer as it has died (within warranty). It is a rack mounted unit weighing around 28kg. As its the same shape as a rack mounted server I am not sure how I would go about packaging it up to send it so I was wondering if there were any couriers who package items and deliver them as part of the service?

Depending on the company but some firms will sent an advance replacement and you can then use that box to return the faulty one. Worth asking?

Which brand of UPS is it just out of interest? We have just had 2 UPS's replaced under warranty from APC (one was 28kg and the other was 56kg!!!). They sent out new units, let us schedule a collection and use the packaging the replacement units came in to return the faulty units. Edited by jb2201

If they wont send out a replacement unit, they should send out the correct packaging, it's not exactly something you can just stick in a random box.

I would, just explain to them that you need to keep downtime to a minimum, seems like they are providing enterprise UPS's with a consumer standard of warranty service. Pretty much everything I have returned that isn't an end user device has operated on them sending a replacement and then arranging collection for the faulty unit.

They should be able to trust that you are an IT professional and when you say its faulty, its faulty and not something simple like the fuse in the power cable has blown.

Hmm, we're replacing our UPS this morning after the original failed with a loud bang last week. There seems to be a sudden trend in UPSes conking out - anyone else noticing a trend?

Edit: just reading the above a bit more, all credit to APC - they are replacing our £4,000-worth of 8000VA UPS out of warrenty (we've had it for longer than the standard two year warrenty) for no charge and with no fuss.

Kick off at them then!

Already did. They said it clearly states "Return to Base warranty" on the documentation.

Will ask them about that.

Found Pack & Send and asked for a quote.

Say to them it may clearly state that but we're looking at our suppliers and we expect our suppliers to go above and beyond in these times of shrinking budgets etc so if you don't then we'll strike you off as one of our suppliers, see if they like that
