WMware ESXi Post Install Setup

Hello,

 

I am new to VMware and have recently setup a new server with VMware ESXi 5.1 (free). I have installed the VMware and configured the networking via the console and I am able to login to the host via the vsphere client. My question really is, before I start creating VM's, what are the post installation steps that people configure in the client? So far I have installed the licence key and configured the time. Most of the guides I have found don't seem to indicate there is much more to do and to start creating VM's, but I just wanted to get some feedback from others before I proceed

First, upgrade it to 5.5 (free as well)! 5.1 doesn't officially support 2012 R2 (I had a VM crash on 5.1 that's stable now on 5.5) and has restrictions on RAM.

 

Give it a static IP to help management. Enable SSH as it can be handy sometimes. Then, just go for it - it's a great piece of software.

Yep, as above. I installed my first ESXi host a while back and once you are licensed you are good to go. I will say though, it's a good idea to poke around the software and see what is where first. It will save time when you come to create VM's.

Ah yes, this. Just be sure to use 8 whenever you create / convert a VM.

Yes use version 8, Also don't use the e1000 network card with server 2012 VM's, i jave a feeling there is an issue with this.

And beware, if you use VEEAM for backups, there is a problem with 5.5 Update 1 and NFS (which affects restores).

I don't believe the OP uses Veeam B&R for backups, since it does not support free ESXi. However, as a side note regarding the mentioned issue affecting NFS storages, it was addressed by VMware in the KB2077360 patch.
