[sims] Remote Access for SIMS

Hi,

 

We've recently just rolled out SIMS to our School over from E1. SLT have now asked us to provide remote access for SIMS so that they can modify data from home.

 

We've not been much involved with the purchasing of SIMS so we've not had much input, only the deployment and implementation. I know that we have purchased InTouch and SLG as part of the package.

 

How have some of you allowed staff access to SIMS remotely? All threads that I have read are from 2006 - 2008 so surely there is some more current info.

Check what they want to do, most things they'll want you can do offline, like writing reports or timetabling, then sync it back. I think I'd be getting worried if teachers are taking lessons registers whilst at home.

Our staff do a lot of SIMS related things through a Moodle plugin however not all are happy with it, and the way I see it carrying SIMS reports on a USB stick for offline use is a massive security risk.

 

Offering SIMS remotlely through a secure channel seems the best option, in my opinion.

All my primary schools have a remote desktop gateway so the staff get a full domain desktop from home complete with domain apps, network drives and printers.

We do it through Remote Desktop, you can either have a gateway or a proprietary solution like RemoteSpark.

I think if your issuing staff with laptops, which they use a home. It's less problematic. The USB stick idea is a pretty horrid idea. The RemoteApps is a brilliant way to get around the BYOD problem.

Here we use Remote Desktop but do not give access to all staff. I also use LogMeIn Pro directly to my work PC. (I also use Logmein Ignition on iPad and iPhone)

I wouldn't think many SLT would want to go in and amend data unless it's a primary. Even then the task is normally delegated to an admin responsible for it.

 

My point is, if they just want access to data, or do some basic tasks, you have bought SLG and that is the Capita recommended remote access tool. It is designed for attendance, reports, homework etc. Good or bad, you have it, i'd get that rolled out, to give the basic access. Perhaps they don't need to 'edit' as much as they think, and can get away with read only access...

 

If you really do need remote access to the SIMS client, then the above will work, and there are defo recent threads from this year where the same question has been asked.
