Media streaming

I'm hoping to setup a media server streaming audio, video and pictures.

 

I've not been asked for this and therefore I have no budget.

 

How are you doing it? If you are that is.

Alternatively people like xbmc (which Plex was forked from) personally I love the server / client architecture of Plex - and it tends to just work.

I use Plex mainly at home btw. But I know there are people on here who have used it in schools.

Do you know if it scales well with multiple users?

 

Windows or Linux as the OS?

I only really run it at home with 7-8 clients and not all at once. Never had an issue though on a single band wireless router and a gigabit network.

 

My server runs on windows OS. But there are mac and Linux versions. Clients on most devices or web browser.

Personally I found plex to be really buggy, especially on mobile devices, at home I use Mediabrowser as it does everything XBMC does but with a client server model. Also Mediabrowser is free, plex tries to be free but then charges a plex pass subscription for 'early access' (in other words timely) bug fixes and features.

Do you run mediabrowser at home only?

 

It seems to support ios for free (we have over 100 iPads)

Yeah only at home I'm afraid, inthe same league as Plex though
