howartp Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 (edited) Does anyone use the SmartID product (that comes with Nationwide's cashless system) for integrating with other technologies, in particular MFD copiers? If so, who do you use and for what, please? We're currently discussing replacing or upgrading our Cunninghams system, but need to ensure that when our copier lease is up next year we can use the same cashless fingerprints on the new copiers. (Current copiers don't have fingerprint as kids are all push-print, but we will be pull-print for kids next year) Cunninghams is currently on Biostore v1, so there's discussion to be had about upgrading to v2/v3 or switching to new supplier. NRS is top of my leaderboard at the moment, and [can't find Peter Willsher's username!] has demoed to us. Peter Edited May 16, 2014 by howartp
jamesfed Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 We've got it here and hate to say it but I'm not convinced; when working it works great however all too often we have the Biometric release thingys 'drop off the network' which in turn causes the application to throw up unhandled exceptions. Had NRS look at it once a few weeks back and will be doing so again in the half term. Either way its a pretty buggy bit of kit.
howartp Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 @john - any feedback on NRS? I know you always used to like it? Peter

We use MFP's with biometric readers for follow me printing. The printers are provided by these guys - Office Equipment Specialists supplying printers, copiers, scanners, multi-functional machines, document management, service, support and saving your business money - Sharples Group - The system works pretty well. NRS wanted to charge £95 a time for installation of there software (not for the license just install) on client machines. After a few emails I do it myself. Thanks 1
Steve21 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 We have NRS and have been looking at moving over to MFPs with fingerprint access etc, and most the people we've been talking to in regards to pcounter/papercut/suppliers etc, all say it needs Biostore purchasing to link in the middle, as the end software/devices mainly use biostore. (Depending on brands etc). Not sure if you're planning to use one of the higher known softwares to manage the printing etc, but it might be different if you only want printing direct to SmartID etc. Not saying all of them need it, but the ones we've been talking to always seem to base it around BioStore etc. Steve 1

Do PCounter etc require BioStore, or do they work with other providers such as Smart iD? Peter

howartp Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 I've just found a bigger SmartID brochure on the net than the paper copy I have - PCounter does indeed work with Smart ID and our mifare staff badges so that's ok. Peter
john Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 @john - any feedback on NRS? I know you always used to like it? Peter Didn't use it with the copiers but did with MLS in the Library, it worked but tbh unless your on self-issue or always have loads of people to sort out it wasn't worth the money. I saw them using it with Toshiba kit at BETT the other year and it looked nice and simple and always been pleased with them myself when I had to deal with the system and people so I hope it has carried on like that since I left.
peepsw Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 (edited) Hi all, SmartID is a suite of products that links to various different products. You do not need BioStore if you have SmartID. PM me if you want a list of integrations. Peter Edited July 24, 2014 by peepsw
peepsw Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Hi Peter, PCounter do not need BioStore to work. It works out of the box with SmartID.
sonofsanta Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 We have SmartID as part of the NRS cashless system, and use it with Eclipse.NET on the librarian's machine and on a self-serve kiosk. Can't say we've seen any problems with it, as @jamesfed has - it's been in a year and just worked.
Kyle Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 We are suing this as a attendance signing in and out product for staff only. It worked well fro around 3-4 weeks then kept falling over. It accepts fPIn numbers but not scans, then it will drop out altogether. Tried it with the POE and with the POE from our switches and still does the same. Ribbon on unit replaced then the whole internal of the unit replaced last week and its dropped out 4 times today. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues?
howartp Posted October 6, 2016 Author Posted October 6, 2016 Howdy. Just bumping my own thread from 2 years ago. We're looking at this again, and wondered if peoples opinions of NRS are the same / better / worse? (I've seen a number of concerns about SmartID, but they are dated - how is it now?) @peepsw, I've emailed you earlier - speak to you when you're back off holiday. Peter
sonofsanta Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 Still absolutely fine for us. No problems. Very happy.
MicrodigitUK Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) We have NRS for catering tills with Mifare contactless cards but don't have there SmartID. We also have Papercut MF supplied by ITEC group. This is linked back to NRS database with a simple SQL query that looks up the Card numbers directly without there SmartID product. If you are using biometrics then maybe you do need SmartID but I expect the same link can be done. What ties it all together was importing the SIMS PersonID in to both systems as a uneak identifier. Had to get NRS to tweak son settings as their defaults from memory where admission number and staff code but they sorted that out during the install. Edited October 6, 2016 by MicrodigitUK 1
howartp Posted October 7, 2016 Author Posted October 7, 2016 Thanks both. I'm happy to have a custom SQL based link between NRS and others; Papercut currently has staff Mifare IDs in so useful to grab those into NRS and also feed Paxton and Inventry. Peter
