Any recommendations for base O/S on 'Thick Client' netbooks

Hi we currently use some SSD based netbooks as VDI clients for Junior school pupils. Currently Win7 is installed on these and they are domain based. One problem is slow logon time from power on to VDI desktop. Was wondering if anyone else has managed to come up with an alternative solution. Ie lightweight Linux based O/S which boots to a browser which can be set as the homepage for VDI login?

 

Any ideas or suggestions welcome!

I have got windows thin PC on some old laptops its basically a slimmed down version of windows 7 it works pretty well and is allot faster than using windows 7, licencing wise its part of software assurance if you have it .

I use a basic install of Debian for our thin clients. It boots into a custom python wrapper for Freerdp (as we don't use anything special here) where people log in, and it uses the credentials supplied to log in to our RDS servers using NLA.

 

You could probably do something similar for your needs - a base install of Debian + Xserver + web browser etc... I'd say have a go at experimenting.
