bloomcomputing Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Hi all, Recently migrated to a new remotely hosted Lightspeed filtering package, which has been great but very different. Most notably, the authentication page for unknown users (teacher laptops, iPads, iPhones, Samsung Tablets etc) is becoming disliked quite quickly. I've got the time set to a maximum of 1440 minutes before expiring, but many have been asking whether this can be totally removed for devices that are known and regularly used. Workgroup laptops, and one workgroup computer, are only used by a single user and so only need to pick up the staff filtering policy. Is there an easy way to do this with the Lightspeed User Agent? Or am I missing something relatively simple with the Lightspeed Rocket console? Thanks in advance, M
HCC Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 The lightspeed agent works by sending AD group information to the lightspeed server. So it works great on Domain computers when deployed via group policy msi. Not so well with workgroup computers or tablets. You could set them to be static ip addresses, and then add the ip exceptions to web filter, authentication, exceptions. The problem is without authentication it will default access to the tier policy level and won't show any user details in the logs.
sted Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 as above but id add the specific pcs/tablets to dhcp as reservations so ypad01 always get the same ip address ypad2 get 1 higher put them in a known range (so 192.168.1.200-240 is only used for ypads) and assign them whatever level of filtering is appropriate.
nikaso Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 On our Lightspeed Rocket system I've created reservations for mobile devices and then added these IPs in under Policy Management -> Assignments and given them the appropriate level of filtering (Staff, Student etc.) The only things I have had a problem with is Youtube on a particular Staff MacBook, I've ended up having to exclude it from filtering entirely.
Edu-IT Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Anyone using the MDM with Lightspeed Rocket? Be interested to know how you achieve something.
robjduk Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 wow your nice. Any unknown device such as a chromebook or personal device I have set to 30 minutes elevated time!
