kidpressingbuttons Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hi, I am currently looking into a method of teachers being able to release the printing for their classes, I have set up and had a tinker with the release station side of things but this allows people access to the entire print queue, which we don't want. As an end result we would like a teacher in IT for example to use a URL to get to the PaperCut release interface for their room only. Is this possible at all or does anyone have any alternatives?

As an end result we would like a teacher in IT for example to use a URL to get to the PaperCut release interface for their room only. Is this possible at all or does anyone have any alternatives? This is EXACTLY what I pestered papercut about for years.. a quick way for teachers to just get the print queue for the room they are in for releasing jobs. The best they were able to do was make it an option to have to select a printer from the filter before any show, but even this means the setting is remembered next time (if they are in a different room) and was only a slight improvement over ultimately what we wanted (which is to either specify the printer ID in the url or have a page in the release area where you can just 1-click select the printer from perhaps a few tiles and for this to NOT remember the selection upon next login. Suffice to say, we still wait for a better arrangement
kidpressingbuttons Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 It's a difficult one, all we are after is a simple URL or as you said, rather than letting them have access to the entire print queue before filtering! Are you just using filtering at the moment or are using another method?
dgsmith Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 We just use the standard filtering that needs to have a printer selected before any show, but then that setting remembers the next time the teacher logs in (often elsewhere) and the inevitable "no jobs are listed!" is replied with a reminder that they still have the previous room they where in selected, or worse that the teacher in the previous room is frustrated that the kid's work is printing (being authed by someone else accidentally). In my view, this is something very easy for papercut to properly implement, but the impression I got was that it isn't something many people are bothered about or see as an issue, so wasn't deemed particularly high priority (and I don't want to continue pestering them as they have spent some time previously on the function we now use). I do know though that papercut read the forums so perhaps they'll respond themselves in due course! 1
MatthewL Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Just emailed my contact at PaperCut, its one feature that is stopping a number of my schools in moving from the likes of PCounter, will keep you posted.
ricki Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Hi could you not give the it teacher security permission for the printer and give they manage prints permission
MicrodigitUK Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 What was wrong with the random account codes from your last thread? Wouldn't that be the same thing apart from the member of staff seeing the actual file name if they could see the queue?
lmgtfy Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 +1 on this, I remember having the same conversation with Papercut a few years ago when we first looked at buying it and they said it was not possible, looking forward to what @MatthewL finds out. Cheers
kidpressingbuttons Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 We are currently looking at other methods at the moment before we can propose PaperCut to be implemented, so just trying out different ways of managing things!
themightymrp Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 We use PCounter for our solution. But I have just over Easter implemented the most convoluted and complex way of running our printing system (from an admin standpoint). To cut down on costs still further (saved near 5k last year)

After a month later, I assume you would have had a response? Still keen to see what the current response from is regarding this!
MatthewL Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Nope but will chase tomorrow when I get in the office.

We just let them admin the queue. They keep the printer off unless it is needed. Then delete all the jobs and let their kids print. Afterwords they turn the printer off again. There is a technical reason why this is a bad idea, but frankly the risk and the consequences are so minimal that it doesn't bother me.
