A lot of our machines seem to be 'remembering' the proxy settings given to Internet Explorer and we don't use a proxy these days!

Tried brute forcing them out with IE config in local gpedit.msc but no joy, they end up comiong back!

Any other things I can try (Except convert everyone to Firefox :D)

Did you originally set the proxy via GPO in Active Directory? If you did (or even if you didn't):

Go to the users section and check the proxy settings are correct.

Then go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Group Policy and select ‘Internet Explorer Maintenance policy processing’ and select the ‘Process even if the Group Policy Object has not changed’ checkbox.

Also have a look in:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer

at Make proxy settings per-machine (rather than per user).

If this is ticked you'll also need to check the proxy settings in the machine part of GP.

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb

/verbose

saw the above recommended by someone else to resolve gp issues give that a try on a pc, if it works run on rest

Why dont you force run an app to import a reg key with the correct settings?

We do this for all staff - different settings for our students, and it gives us the flexibility to stop internet access (by sending the wrong proxy settings) to a user or a group of users or an entire OU of users.

Yep - we can also stop access from singular workstations, groups of workstations or a combination of the two (this requires a bit more work :D) regardless of who logs in / or because of who logs in.
