Group Policy Default IE Home Page

Hi, I have a 2008 R2 server and I am trying to set the default home page for my Windows 7 client machines which are running IE 11.

 

On the group policy, I have gone to: User Config, Prefereces, Control Panel, Internet Settings.

From here, I am able to set Internet Explorer 8 or lower settings, but IE 11 does not show.

I have configured IE 8 settings such that the homepage is Google, but this does not appear to be working. How can I over come this problem?

You can only manage IE11 from Server 2012 with the client as windows 8.

 

It's not impossible but it's MUCH easier to just remove ie11

I have literally just installed 2008 R2 after a server failiure, so would rather not have to upgrade to 2012 just yet, however I do have a spare HP ML350 G6 which supports 2012. Is it possible to migrate from one 2008r2 physical server to a new 2012 physical server? Would I just make the 2012 a secondary dc?

 

Would rather keep with the times and keep IE 11 if I can.

Build a windows 8 machine, virtual or physical, install RSAT on it and do the policy from that machine. Should allow you to do settings for IE 10 +

I believe you would need 2012 as the primary server for your GPO. The removal of IE11 is very simple as it can be done through logoff script. It's only installed as a windows update and it leaves IE8 installed after the reboot. You can then upgrade to IE10 thorugh WSUS easily.

 

I understand the whole wanting to keep with the new but removing IE11 is easier than upgrading all your clients to windows 8+ and elevating the domain to 2012.

I've tried that before now in a few different schools, each time didn't work.. Even though MS originally said thats how it's done.

Stick with IE11, check the linked thread. We have been 100% IE11 (apart from a couple of Server 2012 machines) for a couple of months now, managed via GPP on Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012 R2. No problems to report. No need for RSAT either.

Any chance of a numpty guide please @3s-gtech We are Server 2008 Standard & R2 here with W7 clients. Noticed recent updates to W7 have been automatically deploying IE11, we had blocked IE10 as it was not picking up the proxy consistently. Sadly that also seems to be the case with IE11 which has now deployed to toon many of our clients to make a roll back to IE9 viable.

Only got my phone here to reply, so I'll just point you to the thread @computer_expert linked to. @Arthur posted a link in the thread to the guide on how to edit the xml of the GPO's GPP settings. Basically, create the IE8 GPP as you want it set up, then look in your sysvol in the Policies folder. Find the GUID of the policy you made, look in there for the IE GPP which is in xml format. Change the maxversion parameter in the xml to 99.0.0.0 and it'll apply to later versions too.
