@abillybob Deleting "desktop.ini" from the user folder will return the folder name to normal on the server but it will be recreated as soon as the user logs in again. You need to look at some of the solutions already mentioned, i.e using scripts/powershell or FSRM to block access to desktop.ini to stop it renaming all the folders to Documents / My Documents.

 

As a side note, If you feel virtualbox is not robust enough, VMware workstation single licence is less than £100 (I use this on my workstation)

Nothing is really broken it's just how it's displayed in the file browser window.

 

This is caused when you re-direct my documents to the root of the users folder i.e \\server\users\bob really you need to point it to \\server\users\bob\documents and then move thier documents from bob to bob\documents

Or house your document folders within a user folder.

 

We redirect to a user folder and then have folders under there. That way you can always see which user is which and if their Docs folder changes name it doesn't matter.

It's normally a hidden file. Do a search of the share for *.ini and see what turns up.

I have done mate, I have also gone into folder options and enabled the view of hidden folder and files. I then searched .ini and nothing has come up at all in anyone Home Area??

Aha that's done it but it's found 5 different desktop.ini files in 5 different subfolders under their home drive. Which one do I edit?

Delete them all then refresh the folder (F5). "My Documents" should be gone. It will be recreated when you log back on as that user. You can then use FSRM to block that file.

Well.. I. I didn't know you felt that way! LOL. Now install File Server Resource Manager in Server Manager and set it to block desktop.ini. Job done.

NONONO it didn't work, the member of staff has just lost her Home Drive from her user area??? I told her to log off and log back in to make sure it's all still working and no home drive shows up now under My Computer??

Feeling bad for you @abillybob it's a horrid feeling when things go wrong. Hopefully one of our more experienced Edugeekers will spot this thread and look upon it with a fresh pair of eyes and spot a solution to your problem. I can see that the last thing you need now is advice on how you should have done things but genuine help at resolving your current issue. Not sure what part of the world you hail from but if you are in the Swindon area I use a chap based there who has come in a couple of times to sort out issues that are beyond my skill set.

just the desktop.ini files, I then checked under our staff home drive and it had successfully renamed it back from My Documents to Suzanne but when she logs on it's not showing up under computer??

Does the folder still exist on the server? I doubt it's gone just the folder redirection settings you've messed with.

Are you able to browse to the UNC path? \\server\shd\staff\user for example. Not appearing in my computer would imply to me that its not been mapped correctly.

Yes the folder still exist on the server and is now called the right name after deleting the desktop.ini files although it's just not mapping the drive under her user name

How do you map them? GPP? Login Script? Is it the same name it used to be?

I map the via Active Directory, under Profile Tab - Home Folder - Connect - H: - \\server\shd\%USERNAME%. It points to the correct place now but it's just not there when she logs in??

Should I delete her local profile on the PC and her Roaming one on the server also? I can't use a different drive letter unfortunately this PC uses all the others with it's many ports and things :/ I'm on the PC she has always used and that's the only one I have ever used on her account!
