Have I mucked it up :(?

So yesterday I was playing with some GPO's and was messing around with the redirection of folders, in my case the Documents folder I set the GPO to "Redirect Everyones folder to the same location" and then "Redirect to the Users Home Directory", I was doing this on a test OU with a test User account and found that this method would just create a My Documents Folder in the Home Drive share so for example if I set Users home directory to \\server\shd\test when applying this setting it would make this the users home directory \\server\shd\My Documents which isn't what I wanted, I wanted it to look more like this \\server\shd\test\My Documents. So I found what worked best and got it all sorted.

 

Little did I know I messed up I was editing the wrong GPO in the end result and edited a live GPO for all staff which set the redirection like this \\server\shd\My Documents now every user I look for under our share 'shd' is a load of folders saying My Documents. I have realised the error in what I had done and reverted the GPO back, will this sort it out as I think it's really messed it all up please help I'm flapping around like a dodo in stress right now!

Alex, add the filename attribute to explorer (by right clicking a blank space near date modified etc.). This should add the users username.

Oh yeah cheers, is that the only fix then?? What do I have to do to put it back so test was \\server\shd\test\My Documents or is there no way of putting it back?

I use FSRM to stop it creating desktop.ini in the user shares. Works well.

Ok I have tried reading through the other post but it has slightly confused me :S! What is causing it and how do I stop it. I have now changed the GPO back to redirect Documents to \\server\shd\%USERNAME% as this worked before will it sort itself out once the GPO has applied to those users or am I now stuck like this??

At the shd folder on the file server, go to Properties > Sharing tab > Caching and turn off caching (Middle option) assuming that you don't use offline files.

Can't do that The staff use Offline Files for their laptops! Any other suggestions will be most appreciated...

Ha, I hate offline files in Win 7. It actually worked in good old XP! Sorry bud, can't think of anything else.

No not yet although I have only just set the GPO back to how it was before when it was working how I wanted it to.

Id do a gpupdate /force on a machine and then log in as a test user. If it redirects back to where you want your halfway there.

Out of interest we had this set, and found it added to login times dramatically. With the option off login times were normal.

I haven't got much choice I have no machines just for testing or spare servers. The school has no VM software so I'm kind of stuck I try to make test OU's and test accounts to counteract these kind of problems. I know it's a bad idea though it normally all works fine I suppose this time I just "messed" it up. I'll learn going to have a look today see if they are going back to how they where!!

I didn't have a testing set-up when I started here either Alex. 4 years later I've had my order signed off for an ESXi server! Just keep at it, this goes in your favour as to why you need a testing lab.

Cheers. I am not using VirtualBox to test a network it's just not robust enough to me if you get what I mean!

 

Ok I have tested it now and it won't seem to change back. I did a gpupdate /force and then signed in as a member of staff, I then copied a test word document into her home drive and logged off. I have also done several restarts on the machine but it still shows up as My Documents on the file server!! This is sooooo depressing does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?

Sorry but you do have a choice in order to perform your job you need to be able to test safely therefore you need to organise within whatever budget is available to obtain some hardware even a single pc will do.

 

There is plenty of choice for low cost machines from say ICT Direct that would do the job for you http://www.ict-direct.co.uk/computers/high-spec-workstations/hp-z200-refurbished-workstation.html

Guys I have acknowledged I've made a mistake but I'm sure we all have at some point. Telling me I need to setup a testing lab now isn't helping. I appreciate @fairm010 feedback and help on this subject, all I'm asking is if you know whether or not there is a way to sort this, once this issue is sorted I will go off and apply for some testing machines but I just really need any help you can give me regarding this problem and it would be most appreciated.
