Hi there, I have been supporting Primary Schools for a number of years and with the recent withdrawal from RM in the education sector hardware market, schools are struggling to find child friendly laptops.

A couple have tried the smaller FizzBooks, but some of the older kids find them fiddly.

Does anyone have some good recommendations?

The laptops need to be cost effective and robustly built.

Reconditioned Lenovos from ICT Direct

Built like bricks

Not large but large enough to use comfortably

Cheap!

12 month extendable warranty

Thanks for your post, this is exactly what I would have suggested. Ironically, a school I work with has done exactly as you have suggested in your post, and their comments were:

We gave the Lenovo laptop try over the week (From ICT-Direct) but have decided not to go for it as the children found it difficult to use.

AGHHHHHH!!!!

What do they want then? What made the RM laptops so child friendly?

After all, apart from children with specific problems, they are probably using laptops etc at home OK

I do have the smaller and more accessible X220 coming in this week. Wanna try one of those instead? They're 12.1" i5 2520M, 4GB Ram 120GB SSD, £295 :)

Looking for similar things here, we're refitting the junior end of the school (Nursery - Year 2) that currently has RM Mobile One laptops. They were great having colour coded keyboards, but it seems no-one produces anything similar in a laptop any more - unless someone out there knows otherwise? We would be ordering a set of 16.

Just got 16 Lenovo Essentials with i3 processors for a primary school - got the advantage that they don't have the trackpoint or the reverse mouse which can be a real pain. Build like you would expect from Lenovo too!
