Is just the update itself there and/or can you apply the update via the complete ISO?

You can get just the update itself from the Windows Update feature, or add it into your WSUS server (if you use one). Its big, around 700Mb. I don't know if you can just install the update from that ISO, probably not is my guess.

We have WSUS but I can't get it to work with W8 for the moment (and not enough time to troubleshoot, as it doesn't seem to be a simple fix).

 

Not sure if I may have even installed Update 1. How would I know?! Nothing's showing in Windows Update (via the Internet).

If you have Update 1 installed, go to the Windows 8 start screen and you should see a power button and search icon in the top right.

Depending on how many machines you need to do, you could install the updates manually. Do a search for KB2919442 (a prerequisite you MUST have) and then the actual update KB2919355

Download came through last night, and I've already had it installed on my PC. Will let the 2012R2 servers do the update on Saturday when I come in to finish up some odd jobs. Really hoping the update sorts out the SMB file sharing issues I've hit in my other thread.

There's nothing significant but if you want to use Enterprise mode in IE11, you'll need them.

Nee admx not required, I think there is 10-20 changes total across all of them, read an article I cant find now on it when it came out

Nothing specific that I can see but there is the "Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep and Hibernate commands" setting. That may turn it off?

I've just tested the theory anyway, it doesn't hide the button but it says "There are no power options available" when you click on it.

Why would you want to remove that?

 

(There are ways, via the registry to both enable and disable it...)

Just one example: we ask our pupils to never shut down the lab computers, just to sign out. They then go into sleep mode on a (short) timer. This ensures the fastest resume time, and allows us to WoL according to the lab booking system, which doesn't always work reliably if the computer has been fully shut down.

 

Before we disabled this ability, they frequently shut down anyway because a) pupils don't always pay attention to instructions (shocking, I know) and b) some would do it because they knew it caused inconvenience. The lack of on-screen power button suited us just fine; now we have the situation described above where we have a button that does nothing except display a message saying "There are no power options available". It would be nice if we could hide it for pupils altogether.
