I've not come across a single (non technical person) yet who gets or understands what tiles are all about - they just want a clean desktop.

All but a single member of staff at my school is happy with the Start Screen. I did 20 mins of training to show them how to customise it all and I had people lining up to ask me when their computer would be upgraded.

The 'clean' aspect, however, is absolutely correct. The single biggest problem with acceptance of the Start Screen is how cluttered the default one is, even on a vanilla install, devoid of OEM clutter. If you start people off with a nice clean Start Screen and show them how to customise it, they take to it very quickly. Our default has just 8 tiles: File Explorer, IE, Desktop, Calculator, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher. Several users who had Windows 8 at home commented on first seeing it in school that what I'd done was much nicer than they had at home. Some of those same people now have quite busy Start Screens that they have put together themselves, but they still like it, because it's their Start Screen.

Damn... guess I really am going to have to get stuck into this learning Powershell thing!

One would assume that some fancy GUI will no doubt be implemented backended by powershell by the time we all come to using it. So, as much as i look forward to playing with PC settings via powershell, hopefully we won't be required to for the bulk of it by the time group policy is abandoned in favour of it.

Getting to be more like a Windows 7 desktop with every update

And I've just come up with a new name for the update, Windows 7.1

To be honest, I could see GPOs being replaced by integration into SCCM. The fact that SCCM has reporting means you could see if policies were being applied or not. I think Microsoft see SCCM as an integral part of the future and are trying to push it, to me it makes sense given the power that it has.

I for one would be very happy with this, it would really centralise everything and with the ability to setup alerts it would be easier to keep on top of things. I think they would have to offer stripped down versions for small businesses though as the price might be too high.
