Hi, I wondered if anyone can help,

I have bought a sever and installed windows server 2008 R2 and set it up as a DC with AD on.

I have set a static I.P as 192.168.0.92

Subnet: 255.255.255.0

DG: 192.168.0.1

The router is the DHCP Server, so how can I get the computers in my house (running windows 7 pro and windows 8.1 enterprise) to join the DC?

If anyone could help this would mean a lot...

Thanks

Dan

Disable DHCP on your router and use your server for DHCP. Setup DHCP so the DNS points to your DC.

Do you actually know how to join them to a domain? I am assuming so as you have setup a DC.

Interesting choice of IP address for the server. It will work but personally I would set any statics at the bottom of the range. This is probably over kill for a home network but I'd set aside 192.168.0.2 - 9 for infrastructure (only ever needed if you get layer 3 switches), 192.168.0.10-19 for servers (not just DCs, Nas box, media centre or anything else like that. 192.168.0.20-31 perpherals, Printers, ip Cams etc. Then 192.168.0.32 to 254 for the DHCP scope, Leave the SNM as it is.

Then again you could set it up as one DHCP Scope 192.168.0.2-254 and reserve 192.168.0.92 for your server. It would be easier but I'm old school and I like structure.

If your DC is running DNS which is probably is then you don't need to disable DHCP. You just need to change the clients DNS entry to point to your DC

As above, just change your DNS settings, We don't have DHCP running on any Windows servers, all done on the routers and we have the DC's serving DNS, just point your clients to the DC for DNS and away you go.

So, I don't need to use DHCP at all then?? and on the client pc, I would go into the network properties and change the ip, subnet and default gateway to the DC settings??

Thanks

give the client its own IP but set its DNS to be the DC. then it will join the domain.....

also go to the DC and Load DNS manager setup your broadband router as a forwarder or you probably won't be able get internet access.
