Alis_Klar Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 How easy is it to set up a Dummy/Testing instance of FMS? Also how difficult is it to point the FMS client to this other database?
vikpaw Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 If it's a closed system just for you quite easy. I have a test server and run both sims and FMS on it. Run FMSinst on a new box for that. Client is installed locally. You can also configure the FMS connect.ini to point to it from another client but I'd recommend using a dedicated test client PC and using a differnt letter for mapped drive so you maintain segregation and less chance of accidentally updating the wrong system. Also helps to set up different test usernames 1
Alis_Klar Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Could this be done with SQL Express on a box and client installed on same box. Install on Virtual windows 7 instance and remote desktop onto it? Do-able?
vikpaw Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Definitely, virtualising makes it really easy. I used to run my test server on VMware Server installed on my old desktop. Now it's a dedicated VM on the blades since we got a full chassis. The difference you might find is speed, but for testing, and single user access it won't affect you that much. 1
