round2it Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Hi all Can someone tell me if I can limit the amount of ram that is used by sql server 2012 as I have a Library database on sql 2008 on the same server this is now running like a dog and eventually packs in. I need to stop and start the sql 2008 instance then it works again for a while. on server 2012 Sims/FMS/Discover/solus3 on the sql 2012 instance Eclipse.net is running on the 2008 instance (support say i can not move to 2012) The server is running at 90% ram usage (expected) got more ram coming but I will be in the same boat once sql 2012 gets its hands on it. This problem only happened once sims was migrated to sql 2012 as it was on sql 2008 with no slow downs. any ideas.
3s-gtech Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Yes you can do this - from within SQL Management Studio you can set maximum and minimum RAM usage (we do both, as it makes a big difference to SIMS performance). 1
round2it Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) can you eloborate on this process i was looking at resource pools is this the correct area in sql 2008 Edited March 11, 2014 by round2it
round2it Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) If i can ask what spec is your sims server. As ours only has 8gig currently just ordered 32gig so this could help Ours is quad core opteron just running sims fms discover solus 3 and eclipse database and eclipse front end via iis. Update... Ok found the option in sql 2012 What would be a good maximum for sims/fms/discover Really need this ram to turn up. Edited March 11, 2014 by round2it
Marshall_IT Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I'm just about to have sims installed with intouch and hosted slg link. I'd also really like to know people's server specs as well any other optimizations people have run.
3s-gtech Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I have 32GB in the server, something like 20GB minimum RAM for SQL and maximum 26GB (or thereabouts). There are a few things in there as it's a VM with too little pagefile space on the disks, but it's quick enough. That has two quad core Opterons inside. Running SIMS, Discover, FMS, SOLUS3. 1
round2it Posted March 11, 2014 Author Posted March 11, 2014 Thanks for that What amount of ram do you allocate to sql
3s-gtech Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Looking at the server today - minimum 16GB, maximum 26GB. 1
round2it Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 anyone else like to post sql ram settings
Steve_T Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Top of my head, Log into management studio to the instance you wish to assign a RAM limit to > Right click the very top of the tree (Servername\Instance) and properties > Should be a tab for memory. Doesn't take effect until a full server reboot.
