Migratin Exchange to Office 365

Hi,

We are planning a major hardware upgrade for the summer - new hosts and storage etc.

 

We are currently still using Exchange 2003 and have been advised by our ICT support company that the migration of our Exchange 2003 to the cloud solution will take 6 days - is this a reasonable time or are they having a laugh?

Seems quite a long time but I guess it depends how its done.

 

We just created new Office 365 accounts for our students with no migration so it took a few minutes to create the usernames from a CSV file.

 

For teachers and admin staff we just created the new accounts then manually attached a PST file to their outlook clients. That took about 48hrs and wasn't a huge issue for most people.

It really depends how many users are involved. Some PST files can be huge and very much relies on your upload speed to Office 365 servers. It's this that's the bottleneck in this kind of migration!

It is possible to implement a staged or cutover migration from Exchange 2003 to Office 365 using Exchange Admin Center in Office 365. I do agree to a certain extent that the migration time will be dictated by the size of your Exchange mail-store(s) but 6 days seems a little excessive to me.

how big are you? It took us 4 months.

I've just moved from exchange 2003 to office 365 using the staged migration , did a csv dump of all mail users from active directory in two batches of 750ish users and migrated everyone's emails (300gig) in about 48 -60 hours as once it started just left it going with 100mb internet connection. It took me longer to get DNS records and dirsync working to pick up than it did for the migration so they might be allowing for that in the 6 days but make sure they don't charge you while they wait for DNS to settle and dirsync to be sorted.

Six days does sound a bit high but probably wiggle room as said earlier.

 

Also Exchange 2k3 to O365 or Exchange 2010 or above de-single-instances the data so if your current DB is 50GB deduped and lots of users have lots of the same stuff it can easily be 300GB or more by the time your finished. We had one place we could not move to new Exchange till a new SAN was purchased as the data increase was that huge.

About 1400 users. Not too worried about the pupils - they can start again from scratch with new accounts, it's the staff that will need mailboxes moving.
