cookie_monster Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hi all, I'm sure the title says it all but I'm looking for a new Blu Ray player. I'd like one that can connect to Netflix particularly so I don't have to keep plugging my laptop into the TV. The market seems to be full of options so I'm looking for a recommendation, call me lazy At some point I'm going to get a raspberry PI and get that doing this job but I just haven't got time at the moment with Little Cookie Monster on the way Cheers all.

cookie_monster Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) The player is a BD-F5100 and that link is for a BD-D5100, just checking that it isn't a subtle difference that means no Netflix If your mums is the BD-F5100 and it does Netflix then I'm in business EDIT A good piece of equipment if you only want a blu ray player. I had the intention of joining Netflix and joining online services. However this player only has iplayer and you tube. rich_tech Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Buy PANASONIC DMP-BDT130EB Smart 3D Blu-ray Player | Free Delivery | Currys I wouldn't go above a £100 for one of these their coming down in price all the time now unless you want wireless really, I bought one of these in January for my home, does 3D as well though I don't have a TV for that and plays netflix without a problem though we don't bother with any of the other smart stuff on it really
cookie_monster Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 Well so after 3 days of waiting in for Yodel to deliver my BD-F5100 I finally cancelled it and fetched one myself BUT there's a problem. I can't update the firmware!!! I've downloaded the 1013.1 firmware update from Samsung, put it on a USB drive but it fails to detect an update. I can play an mpeg off the drive so it's detecting the drive. I unzipped the update file to the root of the drive as per instructions but still no joy. Currently the player lists the firmware as BSP-F5100XUB-1010.1 I've also tried the online update but that also tells me I have the latest version. Can anyone help? Thanks.
featured_spectre Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 We had the same issue. We called samsung, they gave us a specific download attachment which allowed the machine to see the ZIP file. I dont know if I still have it but it will be worth giving them a ring anyway. 1

It definitely does not require to be in a certain directory structure ie create a folder named UPDATE and then another folder with the name of the blu ray player and then put the update file inside of there or something along those lines ? Wording is a bit rubbish but it says How to Upgrade the BD - Player : 1. Power on the BD - Player and wait until Home Menu appear 2. Plug in USB Flash Drive into BD - Player, select “Yes” when pop - up “Connecting to portable device” appear s . 3. Enter menu Settings > Support > Software Upgrade > By USB. 4. Player will search for newer firmware file on your USB Flash Drive automat ically . 5. Select “Yes” when popup asking for upgrade confirmation appear s . To me that means placing the file on the root of the USB Drive but as Carl ( @nephilim stated ) possibly better to contact Samsung and they will direct you to the correct firmware file to use

It seems a bit silly to have to load it from a flash drive. Yeh I tried that but it wouldn't work, it of course wouldn't work at I already had the latest version for the U.K product.
