The school was given a large sum of money for the science department so they are refurbishing 3 of the current rooms, knocking down 2 of them then building 3 new class rooms with a big corridor in their place

 

In the corridor (Which is easily big enough for a decent sized 5 a side pitch) above the new classroom doors there is a big space that the school want to display something onto.

 

There has been a white space painted for this which is 2 meters high and 17 meters wide. I have been told they want to use projectors instead of screens and that they want to show digital signage and be able to have an apple tv connected as a minimum. I liked the idea of having the scan your own fish into the aquarium displayed like on one of the BETT stands but other than showing it on open days im not sure how much use that would be

 

I have arranged for a company to come in to give me some ideas and a quote on what to do with the space and how to do it

 

Has anyone had to do anything like this before? Have you got any examples of what you did?

A 2:17 screen is very, very widescreen - it would take a dozen 4:3 projectors to fill that, or 10 widescreen projectors. That's a lot of displays for one PC to drive. You could, of course, use less projectors and have them further away from the wall so they fill more of the area each - less effective resolution to deal with, but should still look pretty good as a large-screen display. I've seen QLab for the Mac being used to combine multiple projected screens in to one display (it deals with extending displays and masking parts that you don't want to use), I'm not sure what the Windows equivilant would be. With something like that, you would probably get away with a more realistic 3 or 4 projectors.

 

If you have multiple displays, they don't always have to be combined in to one large display - most projectors will have multiple inputs on them, you could have them hooked up to a secondary system. Some kind of Raspberry Pi based project might be an idea - a Pi, hooked up to a display, running some kind of simulation influencable by pupils (I suggest avoiding the ability for pupils to type text directly into anything that gets displayed...).

I've heard that "Screen Monkey" is good for doing multi head displays. Not something I've had any personal experience with though...

The 2:17 is more of a guide than a target. That is the largest it can be but if the finished solution is smaller the white box can be painted round to reduce its size

Heres something we did using UST projectors for a school Gym a few years back, each one had Nintendo Wii's and local VGA inputs.

That's very cool. Are the USTs blended or just edge aligned?

It was four individual images not blended, I believe they get used a lot especially on really wet days. The sensor bars are sat just on top of the projectors and they work really well.
