dany2010 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Hi, Trying to use our other domains dns server in a forwarder from our main domain so i dont have to remember all the IPs. Have added it into both our DNS server as a forwarder (not a conditional forwarder). Restarted DNS, cleared the cache. NSlookup when i typed a PC name in says non-existant domain. I can type in \\servername and its lets me in but i cant ping the servername or any other device. Been a while since ive done anything DNS wise. Any help would be appreciated.
psydii Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Return your DNS Forwarder setup to how you had it before. You want to use a DNS Stub zone: https://www.dalemacartney.com/2012/12/18/creating-a-dns-stub-zone-in-windows-server-200320082012/ 1

Sounds like you have done it correctly. But when pinging the server use the FQDN. EG server1.domain.local 1
dany2010 Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 Thanks both. Combining both posts i can now ping computer.domain.com. Any ideas how i can get it so you dont have to type the FQDN in? Trying to get AB Tutor Control working with group.
tmcd35 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Any ideas how i can get it so you dont have to type the FQDN in? Add DNS A records in the first domain that resolve to IP addresses in the second domain?
themightymrp Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Have you tried adding both domains to the DNS Search Suffix via Group Policy? Policies --> Admin templates --> Network --> DNS Client --> DNS Search Suffix List 1
FN-GM Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Have you tried adding both domains to the DNS Search Suffix via Group Policy? Policies --> Admin templates --> Network --> DNS Client --> DNS Search Suffix List Be careful with this, it may conflict with what is in DHCP. I would stick the additional suffix in DHCP.
dany2010 Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) Have you tried adding both domains to the DNS Search Suffix via Group Policy? Policies --> Admin templates --> Network --> DNS Client --> DNS Search Suffix List Thats the answer, thanks. Suffixes dont exist for IPv4 in DHCp anymore by the looks of it (option 119). localzuk Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Thats the answer, thanks. Suffixes dont exist for IPv4 in DHCp anymore by the looks of it (option 119). You have to add it yourself, via (right click) IPv4 -> Set Predefined Options -> Add. DHCP Search Options gives instructions.
