Arghhhh! RDP - some shortcuts crash explorer

Really having 'one of them days'!

 

I run my desktop as a VM so I can use RDP to access my desktop from any machine. However its started doing a really irritating thing whereby clicking certain shortcuts crash explorer. This happens with any msi, Server Manager, DHCP, bat files to name a few. Other shortcuts appear to be unaffected. Application logs shows a "faulting module name msvcr100.dll" error.

 

However, if I jump onto the Hyper-V server, connect to the VM and login, all those shortcuts work!

 

Someone please tell me what's going on before grab my coat, drive home at breakneck speed, lock the doors, draw the curtains and order a comforting Dominos pizza 'cos I've had enough of today

Turns out its actually only effects my machine, just like the YouTube problem I posted about the other day and countless other niggles this machine has, Its now officially going in the bin, taken to with a mallet, covered in petrol, set alight, then shot.

 

My coat is on and I'm off to enjoy some :pizza::pizza:

Time for a re image or restore from snap shot or just use a fresh install of whatever OS in the VM and put all the data / apps back etc ??

I have a feeling that msvcr100.dll is something to do with Visual C++. Have you tried reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable (+any patches via windows update)?

Remove any / all Visual C++ Redistributable via programs and features or add / remove programs ( depending on windows version )

 

See if that is any better, if you require the Visual C++ Redistributable for an application etc then obviously install the appropriate version(s) as above

Thanks, turned out reinstalling C++ 2010 x64 redist did the job.

 

But..but..how come local login was fine, only RDP, can't understand that?

Spoke too soon, that fixed some shortcuts (bat files and DHCP) but msi still crash explorer.

Giving up now, pressing the Nuke button *boom*

Ok updating redist to SP1 fixed the remaining errors.

Oh you know what when I got home we decided to have sausage sandwiches instead. I burnt them, they tasted terrible and it ended in an argument.

Fitting end to the day really.

At least today has started better , shame about the pizza !! On the plus side you have sorted out the VC++ Re-Distributable issue
