BBC News - Russia demands surrender of Ukraine's Crimea forces

 

Everybody in the West is scared of Putin. The UN is useless.

 

We depend on Russia for too much and Putin knows it. Without Russian gas, the lights really will go out in Europe.

 

Nobody will stand up to him. He'll get what he wants.

 

And for William Hague to go to Kiev - what a waste of time. He's useless as well.

The UN is useless.

 

Russia has a veto in the UN anyway so it would be difficult for the UN to do anything useful even if they wanted to :(

No one wants a WW3, No one will go to war with Russia (likewise for USA), Sanction talk is a waste, Hague has no cards on the table.

 

If this was a card game it would as always come down to Russia, USA and China. No one else ever has a deck to compare. As for those 3 we all know they can do what they want and they don't care.

Gotta feel for those poor Ukrainian troops. Trapped in their bases waiting to die and their dwindling navy is left waiting to repel Russian guns and tanks whilst armed only with water cannons and mattresses. :(

25th October this year will be the 160th anniversary of The Charge of the Light Brigade. It's good to see that preperations for it's re-enactment cerimony are preceeding on schedule...

If this ends up as a war, it'll be because of an escalation by Putin - if people start dying we will probably get involved somehow. No-one is going to go in guns blazing over Crimea, as there's just too much at stake. America will likely put in place sanctions as they don't have or need much of a trade/financial relationship with Russia, but the UK will be pretty wet in its response, as we rely on Russia for gas and we have so much Russian money in the country (just look at how many buildings in London are Russian owned now).

Does the veto still apply when voting on a matter concerning one of the 5 permanent members? How thought up that system, crazy. Doesn't that almost give those 5 the power to pretty much do as they like unopposed since they can automatically veto any sanctions?

 

I feel sorry for the state of the world in general. Too worried to go and do anything about Russia, a country so obviously smegged in the head, because of our own reliance on it's resources. Hey, that sounds familiar doesn't it.

 

It's back to the cold war isn't it? I don't think it's over reliance on Russian resources we have to worry about. If that's all was at stake I'm sure something can be done (Iraq?). I think it's more the old threat of nuclear warheads that allows Russia to get away with bully-boy tactics. That and their closer ties to Beijing, WW3 would probably be both quicker and worse than either of the last two.

I bet if they tried to launch any, they would blow up in the Silos! (It would be okay though, Russia would say they did it on purpose and it was an "exercise") :p

On a positive note, it must be generating some good ideas for Red Alert 4! A crazy Russian dictator who dreams of the USSR and being the next Stalin, taking over Europe...

On the other hand...the crowds did depose a democratically elected leader/government and certainly don't have overwhelming support from the rest of the nation - a bit tricky.

 

I'd have thought a negotiated partitioning would be the optimal outcome (though unlikely)

Not sure that's a strictly accurate analysis. He was elected. Whether it was democratic is up for question - many have said the election suffered from a large amount of irregularities (voter fraud, intimidation etc...). Not to mention, locking up the opposition after he got in under charges that wouldn't have stuck in any other sensible country. All classic despotic behaviours.

 

Polls in the country put the support for the protest actions at > 55% last I checked.

 

A negotiated partitioning would be against the wishes of the people too - last week Gallup ran a poll which had around 60% of the population of Crimea wanting to remain a part of Ukraine, and not Russia.

Whilst that would be an awesome game. I'd quite like there to be no bloodshed in the lead up to the making of it :)
