Saw this article this morning. Was quite appauled. I know why they do it (because they think it will reduce TB) but other more effective methods have been proven to work such as proper farming techniques and the like.

The thing is, Defra repeatedly lied to the public too - saying that "every badger was cleanly shot and killed instantly".

 

Not only that, but the whole "incorrect data" thing that came out a few weeks back - which showed that bTB herd infection rates were *far* less than stated as justification for the culls - shows that Patterson and DEFRA can't be trusted.

 

Look at Wales - they backed out of engaging in a cull, and they've seen something like a 24% drop in incidence through purely better animal husbandry and better bio-security. That proves the statement made by Patterson that "no country has successfully tackled bTB without including culling".

 

Hopefully, this report will be the final nail in the coffin of the culls.

That's disgraceful.

The stuff about bio-security breaches really highlights the motives of the marksmen involved.

Yup. There's an FOI document with some more info too (I'll add it when I get home).

 

Some of the highlights: the number of kills reported included roadkill animals that were found and added. Also, there were reports of new badger runs where they hadn't existed before the cull interfered with the setts - exactly the thing that was warned about (ie. perturbation), and will cause an increase in bTB spreading.
