Censornet with SATA drives

Subject lines says it all really.

 

By default Censornet likes IDE drives and needs stuff done to make it happy with SATA ... does anyone know of a quick guide to this before I decide "sod it" and play with it on a different box?

Some BIOS let you set it to emulate normal PATA type drives see if you have anythign like that. I ran into the same problem with a SCSI RAID adaptor and Im currently running my own stuff with some reduced functionality. They have said a new version will be out early new year so hopefully they will put more hardware support in.

How many clients do you have btw because a modest PATA disc should do the job ?

You can quiete easily set it up on another machine and transfer it over when your ready. So if it comes down to it. Get it setup on another machine. Recompile the Kernel to add support if you can. Then ghost it onto the sata disc and transfer over. Ofc its a lot easier to find more suitable hardware.

I *was* looking forward to trying it - but I think I mght pass on it now [as I dont want to support yet another thing that could go wrong hehe].

Replies can be very slow any not always good on that forum. They basically will charge for a one off support contract to do most stuff which you dont want to do. The excellent community at Smoothwall is what has attracted me away from Censornet. I understand that the makers of Censornet are a business and that they need to make money somehow but if someone is offering something for free with plenty of help and advice the people like us are going to move over.

Some of the pay for features like the image filter might be good for some people although I found it didnt work to well on thumbnails when i tried it but that was 12 months ago.

 

I would still reccomend it to people though who have limited Linux knowlege and want something thats goign to work out of the box. you just need compatible hardware

Your problem seems to be more likely a global Linux problem Tarq - as you say - the other distro you tried was also unsuccessful. What's xensornet based on? Find thier support area and ask them. Have you tried other distro's on the box? What about IPCop/ Smoothwall? - it'd be little effort to try an install with those first dontcha think??

Censornet is based on Debian with a custom Kernel.
