abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Hey Guys One of the SLT who is very poorly at the moment came into me today crying as her home drive isn't available offline. Basically to put a long story short her old laptop died on her which had no problems, this new one isn't working properly. For some reason when she goes home she can access her home drive but everything has a greyed out X through it. I found that some files and folders don't and these are the files and folders she's accessed in school prior to leaving, these one's seem to be fine it's the files and folders she hasn't accessed in school that give her a greyed X. Does anyone know how I can make it so that all staff home drives are available offline? Would really appreciate any help Alex
featured_spectre Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 have you got it to sync on the machine?
abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Yeah as far as I'm aware it has the little green sync icon on the taskbar!
bladedanny Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I think on Windows 7 (possibly 8) you have to manually run the first sync. That's what I've had to do in the past.
witch Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Yes, but have you actually RUN a sync to check that it is working and see if there are any errors? I have found that windows 7 syncing can be a bit of a mare and needs doing several times before everything is synced, and it can take a long time. Sometimes it needs a gp update as well to get it to start properly
abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 Ok how do I manually sync it on Windows 7, do I have to do it as administrator or can I do it from her account??I think on Windows 7 (possibly 8) you have to manually run the first sync. That's what I've had to do in the past.
featured_spectre Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Should be done as administrator on the first one, then from there it will sync over with out issue.
bladedanny Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Ok how do I manually sync it on Windows 7, do I have to do it as administrator or can I do it from her account?? I've usually just done it on their account by opening the sync center and selecting the appropriate folders. Here I sync the user's home folder and the shared desktop (they panic if the icons disappear).
abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 This might sound really noobish but can you let me know exactly what I have to do I thought I'd done everything right.
sted Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 right click on the drive you want to sync and there should be make available off-line or some such should then sync the entire u/h/ whatever drive
abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 I did that and that is what I have always done but it still didn't work for the member of staff??
sted Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 delete her profile from the laptop, force clean the off-line files cache and try again?
Koldov Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) Have you looked in the sync centre as @witch said? Are there any errors showing? How long would it take to sync the contents of her drive? Did it do a full sync the first time you set it up? Does she have full network connectivity whilst at school, or at least for enough time to sync? Kol. Edit: Just to say I don't enable it here so I'm just guessing... Edited February 14, 2014 by Koldov
pantscat Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Sounds like the offline cache has gone a bit skwiffy... I'd follow the instructions here: Delete Offline Files Cache Windows 7 | Offline Files and Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 Tips to delete the cache. Then reboot and re-enable and force a manual sync and see what happens. Offline files in Win7 has, in my experience, been a bit flakey..
hallb15 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 You could use Skydrive or dropbox, or even a USB stcik as a temporary alternative. As an aside - If she's off sick, why is she using her laptop?
abillybob Posted February 14, 2014 Author Posted February 14, 2014 I'm giving some of your suggestions ago now see what happens
psydii Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 How's it going? Things to check: Enterprise Hotfix Rollup and associated additional hotfixes. Check which folders are redirected. Look at them via their username in the start menu... right click on them are they marked available offline? If not, mark them as such. Once you have confirmed that they are marked, select them and right click sync (not sharepoint/sky drive sync!) This can take quite some time. Depending on how much stuff they have it may be better to ensure the laptop is wired in and wireless disabled before doing this. Don't forget to re-enable it again afterwards.
