Collaborating Excel data

Morning,

 

Am I right in saying that having 30 students all opening and editing 1 single excel file is not best practice?

 

I've got a IT Teacher doing this right now and he is having problems with it being slow... which I think is about right. Is there a right or wrong way to do this type of exercise?

Have they set it up as a shared workbook?

 

Share a workbook - Excel - Office.com is a rough guide from MS. It doesn't have to be stored on SharePoint either just in a shared drive.

 

I used that way with various things and it wasn't too bad, occasional glitches but it did the job.

Short answer - yup.

Single xl file amongst 30 users - not best practice. TBH we would have problems when we had 3 IT staff working on a shared xl file on a gigabit ethernet, losing the current active shared token was the biggest problem. Lockouts were the other...

 

We eventually moved it to a database solution - even a basic database will allow multiuser access.

30 people opening and reading is bad enough, nut editing as well, it's not gonna end well.

 

Why do people teachers even think this might be a good idea, let alone IT Teachers...

Thanks for the replies, I've directed my teacher to use Google docs. I'm just waiting for the ole "well I did it in my old school!!!!"
