Hi All,

We're looking at all the new printers coming out and have come across the new Epson Laser Killer (we're looking at the WP-4015DN) to replace our printers in the suites.

Has anyone here gone down that route? If you have, how have you gotten on and how much have you saved?

We haven't gone down that route ourselves, but we switched from laser printers to Xerox wax printers. Our consumables cost went from £50'000 in a year to around £15'000 (projected based on current rate and historical rates) as the wax costs much less than ink or toner. We looked at the Epson range but the cost was around £30'000 a year, whilst £20'000 is a big saving, £35'000 sounds a lot better to the management.

I had one of these on loan from Epson for a week or so. Lots of features but the quality wasn't up to laser standards, not for images or photos anyway.

We were looking at reducing our printing costs and thought these might be an option, but for what we wanted them for (photo printing) the quality just wasn't up to the job. Text was fine, and they are pretty fast.

The reseller who arranged the loan said Epson were really pushing these so you can probably have a loan unit if you wanted to give them a try for yourself. I'd imagine most resellers would be able to help out, but ours was arranged through IDNS.

I hope it is not the Xerox Colourcube 8570 or the older 8560 or if it is you have a decent warranty with them. We had about 25 in total and I think we are down to the last few now. They all seem to last over 12 months then fail anytime upto 3-4 years is our record. They seem to suffer from power supply faults and colour bleeding into wrong print heads. Shame really as when they work they are amazing printers, fast, good quality and cheap to run. Only downside I've heard when they work is you can't laminate the print outs but that's not a big problem really.

Now gone to the Kyocera FS-C5250DN colour laser. At least they come with a 3 year warranty. Don't think they will be as cheap to run and they certainly are not as fast but time will tell if these are a winner.

Back to the topic though just looked this printer up and it seems very good for the price, roughly £119 ex vat and cheap consumables too roughly £14 for compatible and £22 for original 2000 page (5%) cartridges.

Shame that @MrLudwig rates the photo quality badly, but then again it still might do for a standard ICT suite printer, maybe not just for the Art department what do you think?

Also free 3 year warranty at the minute too if you register online EPSON 3 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY

Cheers

I really like the wax based Xerox printers. Consumables are dirt cheap and they never break! (fingers held tightly crossed) but don't try and laminate anything from a wax printer....it goes all green!

The old Xerox wax printers (Phaser 8860 for instance) are nothing short of awesome workhorses. The newer ones are plastic crap. Shame because they are certainly cheaper, but feel like it. Replaced with Kyocera lasers.

Similarly, we've gotten in one of those HP inkjet jobbies (can't remember model, print head the length of the paper and does 70 pages a minute). Awesome ink capacity, pricing & speed, quality good too.

Had several 8870's fail and poor service from Xerox hence not returning. Shame to be honest. Mostly down to cost cutting (which is difficult to see bearing in mind the initial printer cost) where half the innards that were once metal/alloy are now plastic :(

It's the HP Officejet Pro X551dw that we have one of here, seems ok so far, ink price near identical to the Epson. The HP has a touch screen thingy that can be locked, but can also be fairy easily broken by the looks of it, I wont be putting them into ICT rooms, but will most deff. look at them again if an office needs one.

The contract we have, is any failure gets a next business day swap (free of charge, no equipment costs etc), so if the machine combusts for example, we get it swapped out the next day and set up for our network. No complaints so far :)

Can I ask who that contract is with please?

We've yet to find a contract that's better value than a 3 year warranty (and of course a little inconvenience) but always like to see what's available on that front
