We have booked a week in August in a little cottage in Harbottle a bit north of Hadrian's Wall. We want to break the journey, staying at a Travelodge or similar, somewhere north of Manchester with a National Trust or English Heritage property in the area.

Rufford Old Hall (outskirts of Southport) Wont take a full day though. Just to the south of Manc you have Taton park and Dunham Massey (these both have deer parks with them) (taton park you have to pay for parking even if your a nation trust member.

You also have to pay extra at Gawthorpe hall as it is ran by lancs cc, I believe its not as nice as other properties.
