WebDAV server setup - remote access to files from iOS/Windows/Android/everything

A guide that I have been meaning to write in quite a while! The premise goes that I wanted my users on iPads to be able to get to their personal user area/shared drives and it seems like WebDAV is the technology that Apple has gone with

 

The great thing is it also works for pretty much every version of Windows from 98 all the way up to 8.1 not to mention clients are available for Android and Windows Phone as well.

Nice guide, I'll give that a go but internal only

Suggestions, give them only access to their home drive ? I'm guessing that's just an environment variable

For home drive only access only URL redirects might be able to help, something that would pickup their username and then translate that into the path direct to their user area.

Hi James, used your guide, excellent! got the basics up and running but each user gets stuck when they try to get to there own documents also after creating the virtual directory and turning it into an application I get invalid path, although I have looked this up and its a known problem I think as an Admin it works great just need to try and get the kids into there own folders now so any ideas would be great. Keep up the good work as it has given me the idea to do this and the basics in nearly getting it there so big thanks for the guide

Are you using DFS paths by chance? If so try pointing the path on your user documents direct to one of the servers that is hosting the share instead of the DFS Namespace path.

 

Otherwise that's going on my 'strange and interesting problems pile' - like you said there does seem to be a fair bit on Google about it but nothing really conclusive.

@ DaveCoop, having the same problems here. I assume you need acces to that path from your webbdav server, can you open it?

We are using DFS also.
