The neg rep was removed because people (myself included) used to get neg rep for jokes or posts we perceived to be funny or to the point, and others felt were offensive and harsh. Then debates came about the said posts and it escalated. Rinse and repeat.

 

Personally I think the rep should go, and just keep the thanks

I think it pretty much has done just that. For example if you thank me in this post and then try to add rep too it says "you can't add rep twice". Go on try it if you don't believe me...

Its the rep power thing, many people (again, myself included) used to make a big deal about having high numbers, the higher the numbers, the better in some peoples views. It led to some very petty things. I remember DaveP got neg repped on some of the news posts he put up.

IIRC, I got anon-negrepped for saying something like "I like trains" [That wasn't what I said, it's an example of how innocent it was]

 

I also had someone follow me into another thread to neg rep twice for the same thing. They even left a comment on it saying it was for the same thing.

That's when someone who has little/no rep tries to send you rep - as their rep power is zero it has no effect on your rep

That means when someone has given you positive rep but don't have any rep themselves, would most probably had been a new user.

There was supposed to be another one for people on the Edugeek Panel but I don't think it ever happened...what happened to the panel @ZeroHour?

I was a supporter years ago when it was available...then got promoted last year.
