We just got 30 of these things in Kurio 4S Touch: Amazon.co.uk: Audio & HiFi so that the pupils can use it for an app a school nearby has developed called Flurrish Flurrish Wow, the whole school was running off of that one server? You have come a long way. Hopefully, you can encourage them to let you take that upgrade even further considering your school has 800 students, 150 staff and 750+ devices! I'm hoping so too, it's running OK for now thanks to a Cisco-wireless overhaul last year, but I'm down to my last 30-40Gb's on my file servers so I'm expecting people to hit their disk quota's any time now, plus I'd love to get rid of some of the older servers and get some virutal stuff in instead. mattpayne Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) Unfortunately there are no before pics, but like most primary schools the server room was a general purpose store... we were lucky enough to be able to rewire (Cat6 & Fibre) and this is what Steve and I managed to come up with... sorry for the 3 pics, but my phone looses too much detail with the whole rack... We have from top to bottom... Fibre patch panel Patches stacked switches with one POE switch for our Trapeze managed wireless Rack KVM HP 1u ESXi host running our helpdesk Intel 2u ESXi host running backup and FRDC's Qnap 10TB iSCSi array for disk to disk to tape & bulk storage for our Mac & multimedia warm data old hp laptop as esxi console for the KVM Apple Mac Mini server for Mac AD integration APC UPS It was nice having a fairly blank chequebook and I think we managed to burn the cash pretty well! If it's 10.7 or later you could potentially do away with the "magic triangle" and bind the Macs only to the AD server and use Profiles to do the management side instead of WGM and OD. We went that route last year. Of course, there were quite a few niggles we had to get around with scripts as Profiles don't have nearly the power in many areas that WGM did. But, with Apple starting to deprecate Managed Preferences we found there wasn't much choice once you get to 10.8 and higher. And, with some of the new Macs only able to run 10.9 you start to see the creakiness of trying to force Managed Preferences where Apple no longer wants them used. Can't say I agree with that decision, but that's the reality...
mattpayne Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 we migrated to 10.7 last year so its possible... Its not something I knew you could do. Playing with various MDM solutions, Profiles cops up more and more so training is something I think I might need to bend work into paying for, especially if it can replace WGM and or OD. Do you have any good links for the theory? and how robust is it?

You don't want to see what I have in school.... 1st Picture (from left to right) Netgear ReadyNas Duo - Backup for WD MyBookLive, General File storage, PC Backups and a small WebDav server. (2x 1TB drives in RAID) WD MyBookLive - Media streaming - has everything incl Pictures, Videos and Music. (1x 1TB HDD) Sonos - Music playing through the big Hifi system that all of the Servers are on. Oh and the last picture is of all of the cables coming out of the SuperHub and to various places And there are all of the CD's that are on the MyBookLive, all near 2000 of them.
