PC dropping from network

Hi guys,

 

Have one machine here which all i can think of, is disconnecting from the network momentarily. We have roaming profiles here, with shared desktops. She will be working on her machine, when all of a sudden all her desktop icons will disapear. Its like the connection to our server has gone and re connected - but without adding the icons back on the desktop. She has to manually log off and on for them to re-appear.

 

The machine has been re-imaged and the problem seems to still happen. Any ideas?

We have had occasional problems like this in the past.

 

Deactivating any power management on the ethernet port normally fixes it

 

(Another good one is the rear mounted usb ports deactivating and stopping the keyboard & mouse working mid lesson!)

 

Another possibility is a damaged ethernet cable or the wiring inside the socket leading to an intermittent connection

I had exactly this yesterday and it was down to a dodgy terminated ethernet cable. Re terminated the end and all was well!

Cheers guys will swap the leads over and see if it makes a difference.

 

This is what I found in event viewer:

and

not sure if thats anything to do with it.

Oh & whilst I remember - twice over the years Ive had to replace a cable in the cabinet that had gone bad for some reason when nothing else fixed a problem

Are you sure no little fingers are playing with cables in the class room without being noticed.

 

How many times I've gone out to fix things and it just so happens there is a student sitting within easy reach of a VGA or mouse cable

 

Alternatively, I have also seen some strange issues with switching and cables before now.

Hmm a common one is to unclip the ethernet cable at the wall and pull it back a couple of mm. Then you get a nice intermittent connection.

We got the odd problems with intels going in half-duplex mode. Quick driver reinstall and its all fine.
