robdoessound Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Hi all, I've been lucky enough to be the network manager for an Academy on the south coast. We've just had £1m spent on ICT as part of a build project and part of our development here is to go and visit other schools that have outstanding ICT from a networking/support/devices/innovation point of view. If any of you lovely edugeekers would be kind enough to take myself and my two colleagues in for a day over half term to show us around and let us see how you're all operating, we'd be more than happy to have you over to see what we're doing! Kind of related to this, is there currently a south coast network managers gathering that we could all attend? Thanks, Rob
mdench Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Where abouts on the South Coast? We have recently got Outstanding quite happy to ask the boss man if you want to come for a visit 1
Oaktech Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 You can come and have a look at ours... But other than our internet access and switching, we are pretty much a 'what not to do' due to lack of investment. We are about to begin a massive back end refresh and I'd welcome some input on that... Also, feel free to just drop in for a coffee anyway. PM for more info! 1
robdoessound Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 Thanks mdench! We're in Bournemouth. Where are you based? Would be great to come and visit. If you'd like to PM me some more details, that'd be swell! Oaktech - we've just come from a "what not to do" school... I assure you now, there is light at the end of the tunnel! Would be happy to get involved with you guys and help where we can! I'll drop you a PM tomorrow morning.
witch Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I'm not far away and always up for a coffee - would love to come and see a school that has that level of investment
ozydave Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Take my advice, do your research, use your expertise. I'm sure you know what will work and what will not. Make your views widely know, write it down pass it on to one and all. When they / management ignore the advice you have given them and go down a very different route and try to suck you in to cover the poor choices you can sit back a wait a few months and then implement what you said in the first place. Cover yourself, cover yourself.
robdoessound Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Hi Ozy, Thanks for the advice. We're pretty happy that we've got a handle on it, but we'd like to share practices, ideas and "I had a user once...." stories. We learnt pretty early on the "cover yourself" mentality... it's a sad world when subject matter experts get taken for a ride because someone has an opinion that is backed by voodoo and magic. :-) 1
ozydave Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I spent months and months attending meetings, advising management what I thought would and would not work. Now management have come the point, after spending huge sums of money, they are doing the things I suggested. I am getting a LOT of stick with them saying why didn't you tell us type of thing. I am just glad 99% of my recommendations were put in writing. All I want to do is a good job. It must be just the place where I work :-) If anyone can give me a job give me a shout !!!!
